I'm capturing video using AmarecTV using the XVID codec
the recorded clip comes out fine and plays just fine under multiple video players
but when i insert it into vegas pro the video becomes distorted/discolored looking, both in the preview window and the rendered product
Pictured in the top is an example of what it looks like in vegas/rendered with it, and below is the normal recorded clip
what could be causing this? If I capture video using a different codec this doesn't happen, but right now when it comes to recording I really like the compression and quality results I get using XVID

It's some sort of codec error.
I see this playing 4x3 FLV files in VLC.
I've never had time to understand what causes it. I just use something else.

The levels issue (brightness) is a studio RGB vs. computer RGB issue . The short summary is Vegas either uses one or the other , depending on the project settings and source format, but expects the other when exporting to certain formats. The "workaround" is to either use computer rgb to studio rgb filter or vice versa.
What resolution did you record and export in? Sometimes non mod16 resolutions can cause that border smearing in some codecs with some decoders -
