    Hi

    I am trying to help a relative to play any-region dvd's on his 3-in-one dvd/vhs/hdd recorder/player?

It seems impossible to find a multi-region code? That works anyway.

It's ALWAYS been almost impossible to make specialty players region free. "Specialty players" includes portables, combos (ie. DVD/VCR, DVD/TV, your relative's player, etc.), car players, and home theater systems. Even some years ago when it fairly easy to buy region free players, especially in Europe, most specialty players could not be unlocked.

If your relative does not have a lot of DVDs outside region 2 then it might be practical to rip them to a PC and reburn them, shrinking them down to single layer size if necessary/desired with DVDShrink (easier) or DVDRebuilder (better quality but harder to use for newbies). Ripping will remove region coding and the odds are that this player can probably handle region free NTSC DVDs without problems.

Philips and (if you can find them) Pioneer seem to still make some players that can be made region free. I bought a fairly cheap Philips DVD player a year ago in the USA and I made it region free.
