  1. All,

Ulead has posted a patch located here: http://www.ulead.com/tech/dws/dws_ftp.htm

This patch fixes the audio synch issue that many of us have been experiencing. Although this patch says it is for DVD Workshop it the folks at Ulead told me it works for Moviefactory as well. They plan on updating their website with that information. Note that when you install the patch is says you must have the "purchased" version of Workshop. It fixed my DVD workshop and I have no yet purchased it. ... although now I plan to.

For all of you who followed the earlier thread this is exciting news. I have tested this on my computer and the synch issues appears to be completely gone. This is true for synch issues that happened immediately as well as ones that happened at the end of a recording. Please give it a shot and post your results.

  2. The patch applies fine to MSP 6.5. I'll post the results.

Does this mean DVD Complete is out and Ulead's DVD WorkShop is in?

  3. Hmmm... the jury is still out. I like the fact that DVD Workshop gives you full control of placement of buttons, background, etc. I'm not convinced I understand all the elements of DVD complete just yet, though. If DVD Complete allowed you to have full control of the bitmapped images I would rate it higher...It also includes the capability to make movies from your still pictures... On the downside, I haven't figured out how to turn the background music off yet.... For the money spent DVD complete is better... but it seems to have quite a few issues with build problems from other users. This audio synch issue was the only downfall of DVD Workshop.

To turn off the music record 30 seconds of silence as a mp2 or wav file, save it in c:\program files\dvd complete\music. Select the file under properties.

In the plus column for DVD complete the Slide Show capabilites leaves Ulead in the dust. DVD Complete offers auto chapter generation, saving and restoring mpegs etc. Yes, you currently can't move the bit maps..but they are going to release a GML language so users can creste their own themes. To the best of my knowledge DVD WorkShop offers nothing more and it is $200 more.

  5. I talked with Joe at DVDcre8 (DVD Complete before Dazzle purchased it) and he said the next release will allow to place the thumbnail bitmaps whereever you want.

I also mentioned the music thing, so he was going to see if they could just add a choice to the drop down music menu for "no music"

I also expressed interests in being able to trim and cut or split mpeg2. I don't know if they will be adding that ability. I believe Workshop has that feature.

I also don't like the way Complete's process works. I like setting up titles, chapters, etc then encode and burn. When you bring a video file in to the program, it has to encode it 1st and just one clip at a time. I believe Workshop does all the encoding as the final step before burning.

I may not be correct on some of these points.

  6. The Ulead audio/video sync pproblem seems to be resolved. In running the test I discovered the mpeg 2 files produced by DVD MovieFactory are not DVD compliant at a video data rate of 6000 and are not accepted by DVD Complete. DVD Complete reports there are not Sequence headers at each GOP (no chapter entry points). At a video data rate of 5500 everthing is fine. Very strange. Could someone please verify this? MSP 6.5 is okay.

  8. For your edutainment, here is my story;
I've applied the patch a few days ago.
I've captured off of a VCR/VHS via Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge using the DVD Workshop Trial. Captured a 1hr tape directly to AVI @ 720x408/29.97fps/~3600 datarate/48k CD audio (as far as I know, there is now way to manipulate the AVI capture settings in DVD Workshop).
Authored a DVD via the workshop and tried to create a disc image using the 8000/6000/4000 bps(?) datarate dvd formats. Only the lowest (4000) setting yielded a version that had no perceptible audio sync problems.
Here I must admit my ignorance on whether trying the higher datarates was meaningful or not. I was thinking the higher the better. What I've got at 4000 is still quite good.
So, finally, I was able to burn 1 dvd which wasn't a coaster!
But, now I'm wondering if anybody has bought the full version after getting going through the audio sync issues with the trial + patch and be able to report that it's worth it. Unfortunately, I've run out of time on the workshop trial and I'm wondering if I'm risking it with the $300 full version?!
Also, when I was capturing to AVI with Ulead's Video Wizard/Video Studio 4 SE that came with my previous dvd player (I think) and trying to convert to DVD MPEG2 with either 8000 or 6000 bps via either Dazzle's DVD Complete or TMPEG 2.53, I was still getting audio sync problems. On the other hand whenever I try to capture via WMM that came with XP, I get choppy audio, so I haven't actually been able to capture without a Ulead product.

Wonder if anybody has any similar stories.

    System: XP Home/512MB/7200rpm-120GB HD/Firewire+Hollywood Bridge

    Thanks for listening,

  9. Piko, is the audio/video in sync in your mpeg 2 and vob files? In my case the mpeg 2 was in sync and the vob files were not. I had a audio/video sync problem with MSP V6.5, DVDMF, and DVDWS trial. I could eliminate the problem by lowering the audio date rate. Lowering the video data rate did not help. If I use DVD Complete to create and burn the DVD I had no problem. IMHO I would not buy DVDWS because I don't believe the audio/vidoe problem is completely solved.

  10. Lamont,

Once I've got the patch installed, I did a few test runs by creating the disc images without burning them (I got smart after creating 3 duds!).
So, here is how it unfolded:
1, had an AVI capture done with DVDWS from before patch was applied
2, converted it to DVD compliant MPEG2 using TMPEG 2.53 in 8000/6000/4000 video data rates
Result1: all 3 MPEG's were already out of sync to various degrees (8000 more than 4000)
3, hoping for the best, did a test run with DVDWS to generate disc images
Result2: the VOBs were even more out of sync than the MPEG's

So, when reading the patch description, I realized it said it fixed the hardware encoder's errors. It hit me that they were talking about the AVI capture, that were always in perfect audio sync. Eventhough it's DVDWS that is doing the AVI generation from the datastream coming across the firewire port, that's exactly what the patch description was hinting at!
4, so, I did another capture with DVDWS
5, skipped the TMPEG route and authored the DVD with DVDWS and made a new disc image
Result3: BINGO! the VOB's (and the intermediate MPEG's DVDWS generates) were all in sync!!
Result4: the very next day my trial period expired! The bastards! I bet they were monitoring me somehow to lure me in! Cause I don't think it's a coincidence!!! ;-)
So, unfortunately, I have no other choice other than DVDWS. As I mentioned before, I am unable to capture to AVI without a Ulead product (Video Wizard or DVDWS). And when using AVI's captured via Video Wizard, the conversion on them results in similar audio sync issues. Although I am going to do another test just to make sure.
