That's a little harsh, I think. Yes, the real pros use super-expensive programs to create subs in formats useless to anyone not using those same programs. It's a closed fraternity and they aim to keep it that way. I've done a lot of subbing work myself and have always used freeware and create subs better than those I see on most retail DVDs. How is one supposed to get started as a professional (which I don't aim to do), if he can't afford all that (unnecessary) stuff?

Some of the subs the anime guys create (from freeware programs) are almost works of art.

That's all very nice manono, but if you want to make a living in a field that has a set of standard tools that people working in that field are expected to know how to use, you need to learn how to use them too. Until you do, you won't be taken seriously.

Anime fansubs are a world unto themselves. Nobody else cars about those kinds of elaborate productions. All most people care about is legibility and a translation that makes sense to them.

By the way, I was looking at Aegisub, but I can´t change the hotkeys. That is VERY important for me. The good news is that it admits Mp4, which Subtitle Workshop didn´t. But if I can´t customize the hotkeys....

Me, I still use SubstationAlpha, which only opens a mono 8-bit audio file, and no video. And sometimes Aegisub. Maybe someone else will know of a subbing program you can use that meets your requirements. Good luck.

Oh, VirtualDub (VDub) is an AVI encoding program. I suggested it as a possible way to hard-code your subs. It's not a subtitling program.

Hi manono... Well, I have been indirectly using VDub because Auto GK uses it as part of the hard-coding process. About SubstationAlpha, the problem is that I need to see the video too, to make sure the subtitles are not overlapping the previous or next scene...

Hardsubbing IS NOT (I edited this just in case it was easier for you to see it in bold) what translators are suppossed to do as part of their jobs. But I am creating some subtitled videos because I thought it would be "cute" or interesting to see the final thing in action. Most translators don´t even do the timings (which I always do, by the way), just the translations.
Quit, I will explain this to you like I would explain it to my lovely 2-year-old nephew: I send a subtitle file to my employers, NOT a subtitled video. That subtitle file I sent is later hardsubbed by them in their own videos. Do you get the difference, Quit?

Mr Quit seems to know very little about how the subtitling business works. However, he keeps making a fool of himself.

OK, I managed to change it! It was a bit tricky... However, apparently the command I need is not there among the dozens of available commands. I just need a key to set the final time of each line (and at the same time, the initial time of the next line). Subtitle Workshop was the ONLY program I could find that would allow this (I use the key End), and maybe that´s why I have been using it as my main subtitler.

Also, as important as the key I described is the possibility to have continuous video playback that I can interrupt with CTRL+S (I like this combination of keys), like I do with SW...

I also tried to customize those keys in Aegisub, but the problem is not really choosing a certain combination of keys... it seems that those commands don´t exist. Can some Aegisub user confirm this, please?

poisondeathray, about the video player, I need it to work like any normal player, which I can easily control with keys. My CTRL S combination works as a play-pause function. It the video is playing and you press CTRL S, it stops. If you press CTRL S again, it plays again. Stops, plays, stops, plays. Perfect and straightforward. I can do that perfectly with Subtitle Workshop.

However, there´s a big difference with Aegisub, apparently. The video keeps playing always in the same loop! It doesn´t move ahead, like I need.

The other important command I described is to set the final times for each line, which in SW also sets the initial time of the next line. Yes, it is perfect. It saves a looooot of time, and what I look for is a practical software. This command I describe for SW is "set final time". But it is more than that, like I said: it sets the final time of S1 and ALSO sets the start time of S2, because it moves X mseconds ahead after setting your final time for S1. I tried many other programs and NONE had that command.

Imagine if you need to subtitle a film with 800 lines. It means that it actually saves you a lot of the total work. Of course, you still need to separately adjust the starting times later, but when you are having a regular rhythm, like in a conversation, it works really good.

What I am looking for in a subtitling software is accuracy and also usefulness. Many programs have a lot of sophisticated functions but forget the most basic and practical things.

Maybe you are using different version ? Toggling CTRL P plays, stops, plays stops without looping. Entire video is played unless you stop it. It moves ahead forward. You can change the hotkey to CTRL S if you want

I still don't understand S1 S2 times? The default end time for S1 is the start time for S2 automatically entered with 0ms added. You still have to adjust it just like you do in other programs. Are you wanting to change that default value ? If so you can ask in the aegisub forum, maybe someone can program a macro for you

Ahhh, "video global play" was the name of the key!!!! It was near the end. I found it now.

S1 is the current subtitle, and S2 is the next one. With SW you can customize a separation of X mseconds between the final time of one subtitle and the next starting time... I can´t find how to do this with Aegisub. Do you know the name of the key to set the final time of each line? Thanks for the link to the Aegisub forum.

I don't see the benefit of adding x ms? You still have to adjust it either way. Isn't "0 "ms is as good as "x" ms ? Anyways you can ask in the forum

LOL... About the X ms, I am used to do it like that and it really works for me.

About the final time for a sub, I don´t mean a key to move to the box where to set the time itself. What I mean is really setting the final time when I press the key. Under my scenario, the video is playing, you are seeing the written lines, and when you read the last word or each line, you set the final time with your key of choice. That´s the first rough time-setting that I do. Later you polish it. I don´t know if it´s possible to do it with Aegisub.

CTRL 5 works for me!! The sound just hiccups a bit, but it does what I want.

I have been a member of this forum for six years, and have been interested in closed captioning and subtitles for five of those years. Of course I know the difference between burned-in subtitles and subtitle files. I never thought that you were making burned-in subtitles. I also understand the difference between subtitles and transcripts (text without timing).

Thanks for finally explaining what you are supposed to be doing for your clients. You are a professional translator, not a professional subtitler. Translators would normally just be asked to provide a transcript. Someone else does the actual subtitling. Subtitlers would be asked to provide timings as well as text and/or sub-pictures in a specific file format that would go straight into an authoring program, multiplexer, or encoder. ...but from what you say you have decided to provide timings without being asked.

The software you are using to earn your living is for hobbyists, not professionals, so you should not complain so much about its limitations. And by the way, if you are making your living using free software, you should think about make a donation to the author(s) of the software you use.
