    What is the easiest, best way, program to black out the video portion of an avi file but leaving the audio

    AviDemux or VirtualDub can do it easily but you will need to re-encode the video and lose quality.

    Starting post #6 refers to using the curve editor on part of the video and 'Smart Rendering' to ensure that the encoding is confined to that area.
    Smart Rendering assumes that the output codec selected is the same as the input.
