I tried to look at the aegisub guide with regards to editing .ass subtitles, but nothing regarding changing the vertical positioning and the text size. there is a box that lets you change the vertical margin. i try to select all the lines, and change the number to 25. then i click out and select a line, and the vertical margin is back to 0. Or better yet, is there a way to edit them with notepad?

Don't forget to click the "Commit" button any time you make changes to the script that you want to keep. You probably didn't do that after you made the changes to the selected lines, so when you clicked on a single line afterward, the changes were lost.
As for changing the font and font size, you can try what I suggested here: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/339936-Making-a-subtitles-Help?p=2118490&viewfull=1#post2118490
(And another method for experimenting with positioning, from earlier in that post: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/339936-Making-a-subtitles-Help?p=2114568&viewfull=1#post2114568)
To be honest, I'd avoid attempting to edit the script with a text editor (do NOT use a word processor), unless you're completely familiar with the format and its commands. If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
Having a hard time, still. I selected one line and changed the text. But only one line was changed. I tried selecting all lines, but all that did was duplicate the text of the first line for all of the lines.

Yeah, I think you can only really work with one line at a time, that way (which is probably why I wrote "don't do this with more than one line at a time") in that first post I linked to
).
I'm not any sort of expert with Aegisub, however, so there could well be a way to apply the shift to the whole script... maybe through a defined style. You might have better luck asking about this on the Aegisub forums, perhaps. If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
Open the style editor (Subtitle -> Style Manager, then double-click on the style to edit) and set the margins there, and it'll effect all lines of that style.
