Splitting HDMI and capturing?

I have a PCI-E HD capture card in my desktop, it records through HDMI

Is it possible to split hdmi and record? for example, I want to record games from my PS3 as I play them on my TV, could I run HDMI from the ps3, to a splitter, then into my tv and once again in the same splitter to my pc?

Isn't output from the PS3 protected by HDCP? Will your HDMI capture device record that? I'm only aware of one device that will and only with a loophole in early releases of the driver.

Yes I forgot to mention that, ps3 is protected but my device is hdcp compliant, I can currently record from it just fine just plugging it into the pci card

No. That device is a switch not a splitter. A switch allows multiple sources to share one HDMI connection, but only transmits one source at a time. A splitter allows someone to connect one source to multiple devices at the same time. Switches are normally one-way, and do not function as splitters.

Is it HDCP compliant? I didn't see any mention of it in the specs.

Ah, I see some customer reviews saying it works with HDCP protected sources.

Good for you, but it appears others have no luck with them. The passive splitter in OP's the link had negative reviews from users who said it did not work with their HDCP protected sources. That's one of the reasons it received a mediocre overall rating.

It could work, but it is nice to have some real-world comments to be sure. eForCity has its own website which lists what looks like the same splitter for more money. Too bad there are no reviews posted for it there either.

A passive splitter shouldn't work with HDCP protected sources. Before the source starts transmitting it requires a handshake with the receiving device wherein they exchange cryptographic keys. With a passive splitter both devices would respond resulting in a handshake failure. Even if only one device responds the other device wouldn't be able to decrypt the resulting signal.

I took a chance and ordered the one I linked from ebay (HDMI Splitter Amplifier Multiplier 1 x 2 Female)

was the cheapest I could find and I received it in the mail today, it works great and physically seems durable

I've got no quality loss and no problems recording
