This may have been asked before, but is using Windows Vista Readyboost and a speedy flash drive a good way to speed up video processing, whether it's authoring a DVD, converting, capturing, etc?

  2. I don't believe it will help noticeably for the tasks you mention.

Readyboost can help caching (with Superfetch turned on) a little if one's computer is seriously deficient in RAM, like 512 MB. I have a netbook with 1 GB RAM and use an extra SDHC card for Readyboost. Can't say it helps for much of anything, other than loading programs a bit faster.

  3. If you get one that has a light on it you can see when it's accessing it. Anyway, it's only about $5 to try it. It is 4x faster than writing to a HD.

How is a USB flash drive device writing faster than direct-to-HDD?

  5. it helps for progs like firefox (start faster)

    one important thing

Microsoft recommends the amount of flash memory for ReadyBoost acceleration be one to three times the amount of random access memory (RAM) in your computer. This recommendation should not be confused with the message that is displayed in the “ReadyBoost” tab of drive properties dialog: for example, for a flash drive of 16 GB capacity formatted as FAT32 it will display a message that “Windows recommends reserving 4094 MB for optimal performance” even if RAM size is 10 GB, just because 4094 MB is the maximum file size on a FAT32 volume; after reformatting it as NTFS or exFAT, the message changes to “Windows recommends 15180 MB”.

Hm. Ya learn something new every day. That's still not enough to make move to Win7. Maybe by Service Pack 23d or so (aka "Windows 8").
