Looks to me as if you might have a syntax error in dvdauthor.xml. I havn't experienced that so I don't know why it happend
I guess the relevant part would be:
<subpicture lang="EN">
<stream mode="widescreen" id="0"/>
<stream mode="letterbox" id="1"/>
</subpicture>
in order to keep dvdauthor.xml
It migth also help if you told:
Version of DVDStyler
Format (container) of your video source files
Format of your subtitles and - if text based - characterset used -
picture of the subtitle format
and the source video is avi, 2.0 version dvd styler -
Self explanatory really.
It's telling you have not most likely set the language option ... ie it should be "EN" for english. -

Late to the party, but this looks like the subtitle stream you're trying to use is not UTF-8 encoded, while DVDStyler is set to use charset UTF-8. Go to where you set up your subtitle font, and look in the top left corner. the second option should say UTF-8 there. Change it to something more suitable. Now, I don't know what language your subtitle file is in, but for most parts of Europe, ISO8859-1 should work. Another option would be to change the subtitle charset encoding in a text- or subtitle editor.
