I'm using a Sony HDV Z7U Camera, and am trying to record exclusively on a Sony SanDisk Extreme Compact Flash Card through the HVR-MRC1 Memory Recording Unit. However, the camera won't record onto the card unless there is also a tape in the camera that it can record to.

Is there any way I can record to the flash card through the Memory Recording Unit without also having to record to tape?

    Thanks!

this works for the canons i've used. they transmit live HDV over firewire in record mode with no tape in the transport. just plug them in and hit record on the recording unit. a couple of the older ones needed the tape bay left open so they wouldn't turn off after 5 minutes. should work on a sony also, but i don't know for sure.

you can test it by hooking the cam up with no tape to your computer and running HDVsplit. once the cam is recognized hit record.

Thanks aedipuss, but the Z7U model doesn't allow for Firewire connection while recording to the Memory Recording Unit. The unit actually blocks the firewire port when attached to the camera. It's a pretty significant physical flaw in my opinion :/
I will try however, hitting record on the Memory Recording Unit instead of the camera itself, but I think we've tried that before and it didn't work either.
