I want to know what programs to use to convert Blu-Ray movies to a very small size (1.5GB-3GB) with the highest quality. Now I know this can be done. I have seen several movies in mp4 format that have been converted from a Blu-Ray disc and are between 1.5GB and 3GB and they are very high in quality. I have tried using DVDFab Blu-ray ripper and can't seem to get the quality that I have seen others get. I am now using DVDFab blu-Ray decrypter to keep the original size and quality and am going to try to use VidCoder to convert the main movie to mp4 and see if that works.

I like to do this so I can put them on my external drives and use my WD media player to ply them on my TV.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

BDRebuilder might be easiest to use for encoding, but you'll have to use custom output to get this kind of size.

Note that on the kind of files you are seeing that almost certainly they are resizing down to 720p from 1080i/p to make the lower bit rates look better. Whatever tool you use, you should consider doing a similar resize.

  3. One suggestion. You migth try to use Mediainfo for some of those MP4 files you like. Perhaps you can see which encoder and parameters that's used there.

  4. Ripbot is another one, not quite as easy to use as BDRB.

I agree that for that kind of file size/bitrate, surely the video must have been resized to 720p. That would look like crap at 1080p.

You might consider using crf encoding (constant rate factor), i.e. quality based encoding. Final size will be unpredictable, since movies vary in their compressibility. Animation, for instance, can be re-encoded at a much lower bitrate and still look good, than movies with a lot of grain. CRF encoding attempts (mostly with great success) in hitting the desired quality each time.

    Good luck.

I am kind of new to this stuff, but I think everyone is right about resizing. When I look at the details of some of those movies they are 1280X528 with a bitrate of 2172 and 23 fps. The quality is pretty high when I watch them on my TV.

And they were also 720P. I am going to try Ripbot and see how that works. Thanks.

I just wanted to thank everyone for thier assistance. It looks like Ripbot will do the trick. I converted one blu-ray to 1280x720 and the size was 1.82GB. Very good quality. I just need to play around with Ripbot some more so I can get the subtitles and other stuff worked out.

Just be realistic - Smallest size and highest quality are mutually exclusive.
