  1. I like to burn MKV files to either a DVD or a Bluray disc, rather than leave them on the hard drive. (Saves space and in case of HD crash).
And MKV files burnt to a DVD or Bluray disc play can be played on a Bluray player, so I can watch them on the lounge room TV.

Recently some MKV files won't allow me to fast forward or access chapter markers when being played on the bluray player. This being after I've burnt them to a disc. Which makes watching a 2 hr movie a bit of a problem if you stop in the middle. You have to watch the first hour again.

Other MKV files that I've made myself by ripping a DVD or Bluray disc play fine on the Bluray player - I can FF and jump to chapter makers, so it's not the BD player.

I'm assuming, (because I'm no expert), that the UOP (User Operation Prohibited) flag for the MKV file (video) is still in place, as that's the message I get when I try to FF, or jump to the next chapter marker - "This operation currently prohibited for this disc".

If it is the UOP Flag causing this problem, does anyone know how to remove it from an MKV file?
I'd prefer not to have to re-encode if possible but if it's the only way, that's fine.

    Many Thanks.
    Robert.

PS. I'm reading through the MKV Guide at the moment.

First: Sounds like WAREZ to me - stop!

Second: UOP is only valid in reference to DVD/BD authored works. There is no such flag in MKV (or AVI or WMV or MP4 or MOV or OGG or MPG).

I have made MKV's myself from dvd's & blurays I OWN and even though on my pc in VLC it shows the chapter marks and subtitles, when I play them either of my standalone bluray players neither the chapter points or subtitles work.

    Do I know why, no.
    Do I care, no.

How do you know they even have any chapter points ?
Do they when you play them on the pc BEFORE burning them to disc ?
Because just burning them to disc would make no difference.

If i need to skip ahead an hour, 45min, etc, I just use the search (?) function on the remote and it jumps right to the time in the video I tell it to.
No need to watch the whole first hour or even sit through fast forwarding it.

    No, nothing like that.

So a stand alone MKV file shouldn't contain any flags etc that stop the Bluray Player from behaving normally?

They work when I do it. I take a Bluray that I also OWN, make a backup and burn the MKV to a DVD or Bluray and it plays fine on the Bluray player with chapter markers and subtitles. I wonder why it doesn't work for you?

My Bluray player does not function like that. (All player models being different). Chapter markers then FF or FR.

not all types of mkv subs and chapter marks work on standalones and pcs. for most standalones you need .srt subs and a chapters.txt file, other types only work on pcs.

Open the file in MKVMergeGui and untick any tracks that you don't want. Often MKV files will have global tags as well as chapters and extra subtitles etc that can cause playback navigation problems for some standalone media players. You resave the file, mkvmergegui ads a (1) to the name so no need to rename. It doesn't re-encode and is quite quick.

  7. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

After a frustrating day yesterday, eliminating one possibility after another I discovered what was happening.
I don't know why it was happening, but I know what is causing the problem. More on that later.

So by using direct burning via the OS I can now burn MKV files to DVDs or Blurays with working subtitles, chapter markers and FF and FR ie; no UOP problems.
