  1. DVDfab seems to give you two options to rip either of them, why is that and why can't you rip the whole 50gb (or less) disc as one?

    You can, if you just do an ISO.

    I think DVDfab in this instance (and others) is usually not just Ripping, but Ripping+Converting.

    And there may sometimes be noticeable differences between the 2D version and a single view of the 3D version - namely the 3D version could very well include a "Dynamic Stereo Window". If it does make use of that feature, a single view from the 3D version will show adjustable cropping & padding (like movable PILLARBOXING) throughout the duration of the show.

    A dynamic stereo window is important in stereo3d work because it helps remove "stereo window violations" (thus maintaining the strong 3D illusion) and helps with the gradations/variations of disparity in the depth budget, thus making it easier to use the kind of fast-paced "StarWars/MTV 2D editing" (that we've become accustomed to in the last 35 years) being usable in 3D without viewer discomfort.
