  1. please accept my apologies as a naive non expert with my first post........

i have a large Video file on my PC and want to transfer onto a dvd disc/s(europe area 2) so i can delete and free up space.

however i cannot seem to get my head around exactly how to do this ?

The file is a .avi and is called HDTV.XviD-AFG.it is 1'188'335 kb.

The software i am using is windows dvd maker (also imagburn and BurnAware Free.)

on windows dvd maker i get a mesage saying insufficient space on disc which i understand.

however id does not offer me any other option ie to spread across more than one dvd disc.

Any advise as to how i go about doing this on my Existing or or any other (preferrably free) software would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

Use avstodvd or dvd flick or convertxtodvd instead.

No, if you are just storing/archiving, then put the file in a zip/rar (in uncompressed "archive" mode) using segmented/disc-spanning, or use hjsplit. Then burn the dvd-sized split segments in Imgburn.

But why would he be using DVD Maker if he didn't want to make a DVD playable in a DVD player? The 'insufficient space' message is unrelated to what he wants to do, and is typical DVD Maker idiocy. I'm with Baldrick. If he wants to make a playable DVD, try Avs2DVD.

Admittedly, though, it's not entirely clear what he wants to do.

  6. guys

my aplogies for asking for more help but i am out of my depth a little here !

i have now downloaded avstodvd including the haali media splitter.

my first avi file is 4hrs 20 mins so i am assuming first i will have to split the avi file into 3 separate files - presumably on haali?

my challenge is that having opened haali i cannot work out what to do next ie how to split the file into 3 ?

any guidence here would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks

Split the file into two using Virtualdub using this procedure:
    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/cut_avi_with_virtualdub.cfm

Then encode each piece separately in AVStoDVD.

Well, you don't have to split it up, but the final quality will be better if you do.

Ok, now I see. On your first post, your reasoning just was "so I can free up disc space", which would allow for just data splitting and burning onto data discs.
On you 2nd post, you said "so I can play on my DVD player". That is a horse of a different color.
Now, I'm in agreement with manono and Baldrick (& davenext's procedure) - AVS2DVD is a good start. Win DVD Maker is NOT what you want to use.

  10. Dear Friends

Many thanks for all your help. I am nearly there having succeeded in splitting then burnt the first of the big files onto 2 dvds.

However i am struggling with the larger 4 hrs 30 min file and wonder if i could ask for one final piece of help ?

I can split it in 2 but when iu try to burn the second half the message on avs2dvd is says not enough space. Therefore i need to burn onto 3 dvd

The virtual dub instructions describe how to split on first and second parts. My question is how do i apply these instructions to split a file into 3 segments ?

    Any final help greatly appreciated.

Then you're doing something wrong. If you're trying to burn to a DVD-5 (4.7 GB), then make sure the bitrate chosen isn't too high for that size. That is, rather than splitting the AVI yet again, lower the average bitrate (unless the average bitrate is chosen based on the DVD-5 size, in which case it can't be changed). And make sure the minimum bitrate (called 'lower bitrate level' or 'video lower avg bitrate') isn't too high. Set it at 250 maybe.

I think AVstoDVD may be talking about HDD space.
