I have a computer with one HDMI output and one DVI plus 3.5mm audio output. Until recently, the DVI and audio were connected to my monitor, and the HDMI to my TV in the adjacent living room. Then my monitor crapped out. I was able to get a new one through warranty, but it's a different model which only has HDMI. I'm aware that I can get a DVI/HDMI adapter, but this will only carry video and the monitor has no mini plug input for audio. So I'd like to just split the HDMI out from the computer to the monitor and TV.

I realize active is better than passive if you want to have both monitors up at once. However, this will not be the case. I would be turning off my computer monitor in order to go into the living room and watch internet video, etc., with a wireless keyboard.

So my question is, does anyone have experience in using a passive splitter for such a purpose? And does anyone know if the average TV will be "handshaking" via the HDMI if the set is on but NOT turned to HDMI input? As I understand things, the primary problem with a passive splitter is this handshaking from both attached monitors conflicting with one another. I don't know if the TV would be attempting this when not on HDMI input, as there will obviously be times when the TV is turned on in the other room while the computer monitor is in use, but never when they're both on HDMI. Hope this makes sense, and somebody can advise. I'm low on $ at the moment, and would rather not have to shell out for an active splitter.
