Streaming Files From Computer To TV HD

Hi,

Quick question, what is the best way to stream files (.mkv .avi .mpeg etc) too my TV? Preferably in 1080 HD similar to netflix?

I've been told sumvision? I was going to buy an external hard drive maybe 2TB and just bang everything on there then plug into blu ray but surely there must be an easier way to just stream the files over the network?

I have just done this using the Sony SMPN200 Network Media and Internet Streamer, http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005TOHQT0/ref=asc_df_B005TOHQT08521126?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE...hvptwo=&hvqmt=

It was simple, and I can now select on my TV any file on my PC upstairs, and it streams to my TV. It is cheap too, only 89UKP or around 100 dollars.

All you need in addition to their media server is Serviio, a freeware streamer, installed on the PC to do the actual streaming. All this over a home wi-fi with no setting up, perfect! http://www.serviio.org/

The installation went like this:

I unpacked the Sony media streamer, and connected power and the video out to my TV (choice of HDMI, component, v+a phono). I then did the network setup where like any wifi system it scans for wifi networks, I selected my home network and it asked for the passkey, and when entered it connected. I then had the internet on my big TV!

On my PC I downloaded Serviio, installed it, then told it which folders I wanted it to scan for media files (music, video, photos). It then built a library.

Went back to the TV and when I now looked at the Sony's on-screen input options (internet, USB, external) it now showed the Serviio icon, I clicked on that and all the files in the Serviio library showed up, and selecting any one of them then streamed beautifully.

Our Western Digital WDTV Live works pretty well playing blu-ray rips from Windows shares over ethernet. I only have a few full bitrate rips though.

Sorry, I don't have any movies in that size, just some regular HD (1080) downloads. They all streamed fine, with the occasional stutter, but my home PC is an aging Pentium 4! The technical specs for the Sony device are here:

Edit: Oh, and buy a cheap NAS that has Gb Ethernet, chuck everything on that and Bob's your uncle, you are good to go.
