Simple Program to Record Webcam in Compressed Format?

I am looking for the simplest program that can record from my webcam straight into compressed avi format.

what is important to me, is that it is stable, that it is quick and easy to hit record, and then stop and hit record again to start again. Virtual Dub was close, but it crashed for me, and the most annoying part was that i had to enter this capture mode, and then define what i was going to name my recording before recording it. i hate that. i'd much rather the standard, records and untitled file and it remains so until i've saved it. I don't really need any other features apart from capturing.

Maybe you can go to the manufacturer's site, they might have - free - specific software for your webcam.

Most people here seem to recommending capturing raw and converting/compressing later. I suspect they're right. Sometimes a solution that seems simpler really isn't.
