I finalized it, hoping that would take care of it but it won't play on my pc ( it doesn't even see it), or my other DVD player.... it was recorded on a Toshiba vr600 ......any suggestions?

You probably recorded it in VR-mode.
Do it again, if you can, in video-mode.
If not, you can extract the video from the disk using mpegstreamclip (some versions of Nero can also do it but I would not recommend ever using that) -
How do you get it in that mode, there seems to be only one mode when dubbing
-
I went through the whole menu but couldn't find video mode, any hints where it might be..

Like it or not, you're probably going to need to find the original manual. My dad has a Toshiba DVD recorder and they do use VR mode. Or you can switch to DVD+R discs and not worry about it. Toshiba's menu system is not very intuitive in my opinion. You need the manual. Assuming you either threw it away or bought this recorder used you can search online for the manual.
DVD+R discs cannot do VR mode, hence the suggestion. And you'd do yourself a favor by buying good media, which means either Taiyo Yuden (have to buy online at rima.com, supermediastore.com, etc.) or Verbatim (do NOT buy their "Life" series, but anything else is OK that they make including DataLifePlus). -
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll get some DVD+r discs....I did a search on manuals online and found nothing. For my model...will DVD+ play on pcs and regular DVD players

Most recorders will offer both modes. I also had a Toshiba and it was through my ignorance that I initially recorded in VR mode (there is no difference whether you are directly recording or dubbing). But the unit should give you the option- look at the (initial)setup menu or whatever it is called - both my current recorders do and so did my Toshiba when I appreciated the error.
I would thoroughly check that first since not all recorders will accept +R disks. -
was able to find a manual here.

I have just read through that manual. If you only have VR mode available, you must have used a dvd-RW disk.
Get -R disks and then you can only do Video mode.
Now maybe, just maybe, you misread the messages and you actually have -R disks AND are recording in Video Mode. You could easily have a bad recording due to faulty media. Here the finalising appears to happen but nothing actually happens. The disk still plays in the original recorder(as an un-finalised disk) but nothing else.
You can still get the data off the disk but you need something like isobuster to do that.
Check the type of media you are using - this unit seems to take everything but options vary according to the type used. And be careful with the brand - there is a whole load of cr@p out there. -
well I recorded it on dvd-r and on dvd+r , I found the manuel....I was able to get them to play on my other player now, but still nothing on my computer.....the manuel talks about vr mode and video mode but I cant find anything so far about how to change modes....it seems like its automatic depending on which type of disc you use.....My problem is mostly solved now.... just can't do much editing without the computer being able to see it....its very limited what you can do on the recorder.....

dvd -r (automatically in video mode) >> finalise disk in recorder
Beyond that, there is no obvious reason why you can not see the disk in a PC let alone play it with a software player. -
Well I know I am stating the obvious but you do have a dvd-rom and not just a CD-rom in your PC ?
Poor quality disks can cause players not to recognise burnt media. Since your other player now reads plays the disk suggests to me that it is now recorded in video mode.
A non-finalised disk would not normally play in another player unless the firmware in both were more or less identical. -
Yes it's a DVD rom......it even says DVD-r,DVD+r on the outside so I don't know what's up
-
Eliminate a non-working dvd-rom by:
(1) playing a commercial disk in it
(2) [if possible] playing a burnt disk recorded from a machine that you do not own
after that:
Can I ask what brand of media you are using ? -
There does seem to be some problem with my DVD rom, it played a movie and cd, bUt wouldnt play my Pilates video...I'm using Sony discs
-
Technically speaking, DVD+R/+RW media records as DVD+VR mode on DVD recorders.
DVD-R/-RW does either DVD-Video or DVD-VR.
DVD+VR is virtually the same as DVD-Video.
DVD-VR is the bastard format.
Use quality blanks. The "brand" doesn't mean much.
See http://www.digitalFAQ.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm for more information.
"Sony" could be any number of manufacturers.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

You're correct, lordsmurf. Just trying to keep it simple for a newbie as Toshiba DVD recorders do NOT use DVD+VR mode, so I didn't see the point in digressing into a "This is technically possible on other machines, but you won't see it on yours" kind of speech. But you are right. My dad has a Toshiba DVD recorder so I am somewhat familiar with them.
