If that mkv has dts-hd or dolby true hd the lg player won't play the sound.
use mediainfo to find the type of audio.
If so extract the audio with mkvextract gui (you need mkvtoolnix in the same dir),
convert the audio to dolby digital and remux with mkvmergegui (MMG, part of mkvtoolnix)
another possibility is that the mkv contains header compression,
if so remux with the latest version of MMG. -
ID : 2 Format : MPEG Audio Format version : Version 1 Format profile : Layer 3 Mode : Joint stereo Mode extension : MS Stereo Muxing mode : Header stripping Codec ID : A_MPEG/L3 Codec ID/Hint : MP3 Duration : 1h 22mn Bit rate mode : Variable Bit rate : 128 Kbps Channel(s) : 2 channels Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz Compression mode : Lossy Delay relative to video : 504ms Stream size : 75.9 MiB (11%) Writing library : LAME3.90. Encoding settings : -m j -V 4 -q 2 -lowpass 17.6 --abr 128
this is the media info for audio -
It looks like your mkv uses header stripping (header removal compression). According to what I have seen in other threads, you can correct it with MKVtoolnix /mkvmergegui. Go to File->Options and select "Disable Header Removal Compression..." Exit mkvmergegui and restart it so the change will take effect, then open the mkv and make a new mkv.

That doesn't necessarily mean it'll support MP3 audio in an MKV container. Set-top players do tend to be rather picky about what they'll play. Does your manual specifically state the player supports MP3 audio in an MKV container? If not, you'll probably have to convert the audio.

I downloaded the manual for your player, and according to the manual, it does not support the .mkv container. Correcting header stripping won't help you.
It says the following:
Movie file requirement (USB/DISC)
Movie file compatibility with this player is limited as follows:
Available resolution size:
• DIVX 3.xx – DIVX 6.xx: 720 x 576 (W x H) pixels
• XVID, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, MPEG1 SS, MPEG2 PS, MPEG2 TS:
1920 x1080 (W x H) pixels
File extensions: “.avi”, “.divx”, “.mpg”, “.mpeg”, “.mp4”
Playable subtitle: SubRip (.srt / .txt), SAMI (.smi),
SubStation Alpha (.ssa/.txt), MicroDVD (.sub/.txt), VobSub (.sub)
SubViewer 1.0 (.sub), SubViewer 2.0 (.sub/.txt), TMPlayer (.txt),
DVD Subtitle System (.txt)
Playable Codec format: “DIVX3.xx”, “DIVX4.xx”, “DIVX5.xx”, “XVID”,
“DIVX6.xx” (Standard playback only), H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, MPEG1 SS,
MPEG2 PS, MPEG2 TS
Playable Audio format: “Dolby Digital”, “DTS”, “MP3”, “WMA”, “AC3”,
“AAC”
Sampling frequency: within 32-48 kHz (WMA), within 16-48 kHz (MP3)
Bit rate: within 20-320 kbps (WMA), within 32-320 kbps (MP3)
CD-R/RW, DVD±R/RW, BD-R/RE Format:
ISO 9660+JOLIET, UDF and UDF Bridge format
Maximum Files/Folder: Less than 2000
• The movie file name and subtitle are limited to 180 characters.
• Not all the WMA and AAC Audio format is compatible with this unit.
• HD movie files contained on the CD or USB 1.0/1.1 may not played
properly. BD, DVD or USB 2.0 are recommended to play back HD
movie files.
• This player support H.264/MPEG-4 AVC profile Main, High at Level 4.1.
For a file with higher level, the warning message will be appeared on
the screen.
• This player does not support the file that are recorded with GMC*1 or
Qpel*2. Those are video encoding techniques in MPEG4 standard, like
DivX or XVID have.
*1 GMC – Global Motion Compensation
*2 Qpel – Quarter pixel
All I can say is that if most people were inclined to read the manual for their electronic devices, the traffic at this website would be reduced significantly. -

Here is a simple way to have your LG play this file on your TV,download this little program,, it changes the sound to ac3 its simple to use,it takes about 15 minutes to convert an hour and a half mkv file to a compatible MKV/ac3 file that plays on everything..A 5 year old child can master this program in 30 seconds..and it has very little loss of quality from the original DTS file and it removes automatcly header stripping..Here is the link https://www.videohelp.com/tools?toolsearch=MKV2AC3&Submit=Search&convert=&s=&orderby=Name&hits=50 and your welcome

To be fair, I've seen at least one Blu-Ray player (my original Samsung BD player, which is now bricked) 'add' MKV support in firmware updates, before (and not update their manual, online or otherwise, (at least at the time - haven't checked it since the player bricked
)). MKV support in those instances (if it actually works) is usually quite a bit more strict than if the player had supported it to begin with, when it first hit retail.

I didn't say I wanted traffic to slow down. That's just you assigning intent that doesn't exist, once again.
However the fact remains that many times people posting questions here wait hours for an answer that could be found more quickly and with less effort on their part by simply looking at their manual.Last edited by usually_quiet; 22nd Jun 2012 at 18:49.
