How much are they paying you?
Reminds me of doing the kid's homework for them...

*I* think it's clearer than the police version.
I notice there's a shuffle in his gait.
I'm working on some ideas that should make him clearer. I think a video can help people identify better. People can be recognized by how they move, and a face in motion has more details somehow. The recreated photo is also fairly innaccurate, imho.
We help each other enhance home VHS for free, why not for a good cause?

I've converted the proprietary files if anyone wants to look. CIF PAL. Amazingly bad quality. There's some crossfeed happening. Should be a great test of PCA separation...

Nothing done here has any relevance anyway.

Mr Sun got several reconstructed images, this is one of them. The problem is, the images re-created by different people vary significantly and no one can say which one resembles the suspect more. So the police only uses the direct image from the video as the wanted man's photo. However, this is too blury. So we (volunteers and Mr Sun) are hoping to get a better one to publish to the web.

    --Hi, Zoobi,
Yes, I agree this should be someone's homework but unfortunately, not done in due time.
I am a completely stranger to these poor parents too. Being a mother myself, I feel their pain and trying to do something to help, like numerous other volunteers do. Knowing nothing about tech staff, all I have is the belief: Love knows no boarder. No matter how far we can go, I am full of gratitude for your great help.

The proper way to reconstruct is by sampling all frames of the suspect.
It must then be warped/layered, and an artist renders the final drawing that is clean.

It doesn't sound like any of this is happening.

    Contact Interpol.

--Thanks for this info. Checked on Interpol and found they only accept requests from the law enforcement of their member countries.
I will try forewarding this info to the police anyway.

Of course Interpol isn't going to take action on this.

This is all completely insane and inappropriate.

Anyone "identified" as a kidnapper by a bunch of amateur detectives playing CSI on a website is at risk of being beaten up or worse. And then his lawyer could sue each and every one who contributed to the thread and the website itself.

This involves real people and real risk to everyone involved. It can't achieve anything good.

  8. Can the mods close this thread now ? thanks

  9. I find it odd that there's a call for closure. It doesn't seem she's violated the forum rules https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/72386-Forum-rules-Acceptable-Use-Policy-%28AUP%29

I especially find it odd that similar topics have come up several times before, and people have helped reconstruct surveillance footage, and no one had any objections (short of thinking it impractical).

Just to be clear, I'm in no way part of this group trying to find abductors, I'm just offering my help to clear up a video, and I'm not done yet.
I intend to continue trying to respond to the OP's request, and to stay on topic.

I might suggest that someone start a new topic to discuss the appropriateness of working on surveillance videos, if so inclined. I don't care much either way, I just like challenging videos to work on.

  10. I think the major concern is ""Anyone "identified" as a kidnapper by a bunch of amateur detectives ". But I can verfiy that these two persons are identified by the police, not any amateur detectives at all.

The original reqeust for public thread of these two is from the microblog of Mr Chen Shiqu, the head of Anti-abuducting Department of the Police http://www.cpd.com.cn/n1695/n18151/c10612761/content.html

The original text (in Chinese) is: 这一男一女分别是07年10月9日在深圳市拐走4岁孙卓和08年6月28日在深圳拐走4岁蔡佳玲的人贩子, 并涉及其他拐卖儿童案件。请网友留意,有线索可私信发给我。

Direct translation from Google is :"This woman is October 9, 2007 in Shenzhen City, abducted 4-year-old Sun Zhuo and June 28, 2008 in Shenzhen, abducted 4-year-old Cai Jialing traffickers, and involved in child trafficking cases. Please pay attention to users, clues can be a private letter sent to me."

    Exactly.
He asks people to send a PRIVATE LETTER TO THE POLICE.
Not to be vigilantes or start a public witch hunt.

People here are treating this as a puzzle or a game.

    It's not an academic puzzle.

It's a real crime. Real people could get injured, arrested, or killed as a result.

You want to help, contact the police.
If you really must, contact the OP directly and let him contact the police. Don't put stuff like this in a public forum.

I can't stop anyone from speculating.
Just consider what the consequences could be.

That's been my point the whole time.
Thought I'd replace "insane" with "asinine".

Something like this needs to be done in a lab, by qualified professionals, with legal jurisdiction.

  13. In order to err on the side of caution, I've removed my enhancements. However, they were very similar to the original, which is public information.

I believe LordSmurf *is* qualified for this work, would you like to collaborate in private?

If you read the thread, it's only in last the day that more cautious statements appeared. People started out with interest and wanting to help. There's been some mis-understandings from people not reading the full thread carefully. As the OP explained, the pictures have already been posted, the police have already requested help publicly, and obviously they have allowed the original videos to be released, as they have been posted (no one would have the files if it weren't allowed). I also conclude that the videos have already been authenticated, The police aren't able to enhance the video any more with the resources available. It's a dead-end as far as they are concerned.

One of my ideas was to crop and rotate the *original* video, therefore showing only the *original* pixels. However I think it's easier to see that way. If I submitted this in private, as a script to compute the result, and taught the OP how to run it, do you think it would be appropriate? I would be computing the object tracking myself and the coordinates would be included in the script. If it's not appropriate for even the OP to run it, then the script and instructions could even be passed directly to police.

Regardless, I've worked on a method of removing cross-feeds from video using recent research results. I can also show people how to do this. I don't think you will find this technique in any current versions of video forensic tools. If need be, the author of the paper could be asked to testify to the technique some day down the road.
