  1. I'm using Windows Me and WinTV Go for real-time mpeg-2 capture. I'm using Ulead Videostudio 5 with the Ligos real-time capture driver in 720x480 mode. There are pluses and minues with the VFW and WDM drivers, but I get much better performance using VFW drivers. I this normal? I thought WDM was newer and faster, and is the future of video capture. When I use VFW mode, I can capture pretty much perfect looking video at 720x480 in mpeg-2, but with the same settings in WDM mode, I get mpeg artifacts and blocky video. It seems like WDM mode is a resource hog, and VFW is better when relaying on the CPU to do all the processing. (I'm using a 1.5GHz P4)
I would like to get some input on how to get WDM to work better, or if I should just stay in VFW mode.

  2. WDM basically means the drivers/hardware are certified to be used under windows. they dont have to be better or faster, they just have to be more compliant.

I believe the 2 types are called DirectShow and VFW. VFW i heard was phased out due to not working all that well which means (among other things) crashes etc. maybe even piracy (like DVD ripping or Macrovision workarounds).

If companies want that "cerfified for Windows XX" on their box, they have to supply WDM drivers. if not, sales will definitely suffer. In the PC world, that is as important as it would be for safeway to have a logo, "certified for ingestion".
