  1. I have had a Blu Ray burner for 3 days now, and have been burning files and movies to it just fine. However, the past day, it simply refuses to burn anything to a blu ray disc at all. I can still burn DVD's just fine, but anytime I try to burn to a Blu Ray disc, it just gives me the following error:

    COULD NOT PERFORM WRITE
    LOGIC UNIT TIMEOUT

I am using a Sony BD RW BWU-500s burner, and like I said, it is brand new, only 3 days old. I am using Nero to burn and have tried lots of other software too, all with the same results. I have also tried to change my DMA to ON, but I cannot find the settings for it device manager in Windows 7. Below I will post the error log file from Nero 11 in-case it helps some peoople to help me resolve this. Many thanks!

Also forgot to mention.... when it has failed to0 write to the Blu Ray and I take the disc out, the disc has what appears to be deep scratches on it all over the disc... but when I wipe the disc these scratches go away and the disc is as good as new, and when i reinsert the disc to write to it, the disc comes up as blank and is ready to be written to. :s

  2. 1. Use ImgBurn to burn.
    2. You might have a bad batch of BD, try another brand.
    3. The laser in your writer might be bad and those scratches are not normal, get an exchange.

    Again, Absolutely!!
It's funny how the OP gave so much info and a log yet never bothered to state what brand of media he is using
Although I did notice this in the log,
    Disc Manufacturer ID: 50 48 49 4C 49 50 h <PHILIP>
    Use Verbatim!!

Are you checking your disc's BEFORE you put them in ?
"Scratches" do not magically appear then disappear by wiping them.
And if they show as being blank and ready to be written to, then obviously they have not been.

Get some good media and use a good Bluray burning program....

I can't even count or remember all the Bluray's I have backed up in the last 8 months since I started doing Bluray's, and the 2-3 that were bad, was because of the software used to rip (Dvdfab), and it was NOT because of Imgburn the media (Verbatim LTH) or the software (BDRB) used to compress down to BD25 from BD50.

I don't have a BD burner but shouldn't it be set to udf 2.50? I thought that was a better format for BD video. That's what I use to burn DVD5 and DVD9 AVCHD for compatibility with my PS3.

    edit:
Sorry excuse my lack of experience with these. I did a bit of checking and surprisingly on quick read it looks like BD data disks can still be burned to the old udf 1.02 format so it shouldn't affect the writing part even if the format might not be compatible with all BD players..

Although I have a BDrom I've been on the fence about getting a burner. I saw the Philips discs yesterday at about $35 for 25 discs in store at Canada Computers. Cheaper than D/L discs in my area. I'm interested to see if they really are cr@p I can't justify paying over $5 per 25gb disc and that's why I haven't taken the plunge to BD writing yet. Please let us know if it turns out to be your Philips media.

Yes, gll99. You have done well in noticing that. The original poster needs to tell us if he is trying to burn a BluRay format disc (ie. a movie) that he wants to play in a BluRay player. UDF 1.02 is completely wrong for this. This makes me wonder if he ended up trying to make a data disc somehow.

Yes, he should use ImgBurn (it's free) and better media would be nicer, but fix the software issue first. Burn with ImgBurn, use UDF 2.50 for BluRay movie burning (you can find guides on the internet in how to use ImgBurn) and do NOT burn above 4x with your discs. These should help you to get burns that work.

  6. Good catch. Had the OP been using ImgBurn, it would have prompted him/her to use the correct file system. Something along the lines of, and paraphrasing:

"I can't help but notice that the files you want to burn appear to be a Blu-Ray structure. The proper file system setting for BD is udf 2.50, not udf 1.02 as you have selected. Do you want me to change it for you?"
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

You may have LTH Blu-Ray discs. My burner will not accept them.

Yep, I never even noticed the UDF issue.
I am so used to only using Imgburn & as fritzi93 stated, if something is amiss Imgburn automatically set's it for you, as it does for me all the time.
    LOL!

  9. I'd be willing to bet large amounts of money the burner is faulty. Don't Bluray burners use a different laser for burning Bluray discs than DVDs?

I've had a couple of DVD burners in the past which would happily burn one type of disc but not another. One burner would burn DVDs fine but never successfully burned a CD from the day it was new. I took it back for a replacement.

Looks like a hardware problem to me. You could try updating the burner's firmware (if an update is available) but if a drive has happily burned away for a couple of days then suddenly won't any more I'd be thinking it's faulty.

Yep, already mentioned, the used media is a bad batch or really crap.

But from the other errors shown in the log, the drive or its controller is badly ISSUED!
Try to clean the drive properly first!!!

Remembering that a "batch" is 10's or 100's of thousands of discs. Bad batches tend to get widespread attention, including official acknowledge by the larger ethical manufacturers.

Too many people think of a sheet of cookies as a "batch" -- just a few spindles, bad luck, etc.

    Bad batches are rare.

Consistently bad/crappy media, however, is very common.

Yeah, but no idea where he bought them....

Seems in the first case a drive/hardware/software glitch.
You can only find out by experimenting...
