  1. Hi,

    I wanted to know what for dvd-rip avi format the movie I downloaded, so I opened it with virtualdub and this error occured;

    Coulddnt locate decrompessor for format MPG4 (Microsoft High-Speed MPEG4)

    VirtualDub requiers a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirecShow codecs, such as those used by Windows media player, are not suitable.

    Where and how do I install this VFW? And with which codec was this movie encoded?

    Some info's please!

  2. If you want to install the Microsoft MPEG4 codecs (& other legacy codecs) then visit

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=31921&area=search&ordinal=2

    or just download & install

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/winmediatech40/Install/8.0/WIN98Me/EN-US/wmpcdcs8.exe

    (Watch out for word wrap with the links)

    Note that MPEG4 codecs 1, 2 & 3 will be installed NOT any DivX hacks.

    Martin.

  6. Microsoft's MPEG4 codecs versions 1 and 2 are both capable of encoding as well as decoding.
    It's the version 3 codec that's now 'locked' so it can decode but not encode.
    Version 3 was originally capable of encoding but Microsoft decided to 'lock' it to decoding only.
    The old Version 3 can be found if you've got the patience to find it on the web.
    That's the situation at present i believe.

    (Currently using MPEG4 V2 for VHS captures myself).

    Martin.
