  1. Um, so I have VirtualDub 1.9.11 and when I try to open my file which I converted into an .avi (with Avidemux) I get this exact error message:

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'FLV1' (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."

But I also have this K-Lite Codec Pack (with ffdshow) that should let me open this right? I enabled FLV1 already.

I really don't want to download anything new unless ABSOLUTELY necessary, so could someone please tell me how I can make work what I have?

Sorry if an answer to this has been posted already, because I still couldn't figure it out.

Be sure that you have enabled flv1 in the vfw ffdshow settings,

Start - All Programs - ffdshow - VFW Configuration:
At the top - Decoder tab
Scroll down to FLV1 = set to libavcodec (that is now enabled)
    Apply and close VFW Config.

I enabled it already, but I think it has something to do with VirtualDub not seeing the ffdshow or something? When I go to Video>Compression there isn't ffdshow in the list...

Which version of VirtualDub are you using - the 32-bit version, or the 64-bit version? You have to be using the equivalent 32-bit/64-bit version of ffdshow for VirtualDub to be able to 'see' it. 32-bit programs can only use 32-bit codecs, and the same holds true for 64-bit programs and codecs.

I suppose I should ask the question I should've asked, in that last post - are you actually running a 64-bit version of Windows?

The 64-bit version of VirtualDub will mention something like 'AMD64' in the titlebar, and About window. (The titlebar may have something like "build 32842/release - AMD64". There should also be a line in the Help > About VirtualDub... window that reads, "Compiled with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 for AMD64".) Also, the actual program files should have '64' at the end of a number of their filenames.

For ffdshow, the Start menu entries will probably have 'x64' at the end of each name. The 'About' text in any of the Configuration windows should have 'x64' somewhere in the "ffdshow tryouts" line.

...other than that, I don't know if there's an easier way to tell, unless you kept the ffdshow installer(s) or the VirtualDub download archive.

    Hello,

I need to add subtitles in an AVI file (MPEG-4 Visual Simple@L1 FMP4 + MP3), and get the error above when opening the file in VirtualDub 1.9.11.

    What is the recommanded solution?
    - Download and install a codec (ffdshow?), or
    - Convert the AVI file to something that VirtualDub can work with?

BTW, I guess K-Lite is a bunch of codecs, but what is the connection with ffdshow?

    Thank you.

I went ahead, installed the K-Lite codecs, configured ffdshow to use libavcode for "Other MPEG4", and VirtualDub can open the file.

    But it complains with:
AVI: Variable bitrate (VBR) audio detected. VBR audio in AVI is non-standard and you may encounter sync errors up to 9226ms when attempting to extract WAV files or playing in some players. If this is a problem, use Full Processing mode is recommended to decompress or recompress the audio. (This warning can be disabled in Options, Preferences, AVI. bitrate: 110.7 ± 15.0 kbps)
This post recommends to perform the following tasks:

    1. Extract the VBR track from the AVI file: How?
    2. Convert the VBR track to CBR using WinMP3Packer or LAME ACM/MP3 codec
    3. Remove the VBR audio from the AVI file using AVIMux-GUI
    4. Add the CBR audio to the AVI file.

Is this correct? Should I use "Direct Stream Copy"? Will decompressing the VBR MP3 audio into WAV, then recompressing the WAV to CBR MP3 add some noise?

  11. VirtualDub supports VBR audio in AVI since 1.8 version.
This warning message is left as a precaution ("...If this is a problem ...").

Thanks for the info. Being a newbie, I wouldn't know if it mattered or not since video/audio desynchronization is such a common issue.
