  1. Hi I'm new here, and I'm using VLC player, mkvmerge gui and Format Factory converter. So I downloaded a movie mkv file and I want to play it on my blu-ray player that does not play mkv. So I always convert them to avi. I never had a problem. But then yesterday after removing subtitles with mkvmerge, the weirdest thing happened. When I try to convert the mkv to avi this happens:-
    1) First it reaches 100% within less than 10mins,
    2) Then it creates an temp avs file in the output,
    3) It returns to 0% and takes forever to convert
    4) When I tried to view the undone file it says avi index broken or missing
    5) but after a long wait it does convert, why

The last time I converted a mkv to avi I did the same thing, remove the subs and it worked fine and fast

What happens if you convert without removing the subs? I guess format factory hard code subs?

And if you have a blu-ray player you could try convert the mkv to an avchd with for example avchdcoder or https://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/all-in-one-mkv-to-mp4-avchd-ts . No reconversion.

  3. Then it converts normally, it's also does it faster. When I take out the subs it does that funny thing creates a temp file and basically slows the converting process down. Not a serious problem but it's funny, but some files are unaffected? Weird Lol

You can try disabled header compression in mkvmergegui, under file->options->disable header removal by default. Restart mkvmergeui, remove the subs, make a new mkv and then try convert it.

As baldrick said disable the header compression. If that doesnt work use mediainfo to post the details for the file.
