Yeah, I've got plenty of old discs that run and rip perfectly too. Although unlike you I seem to be able to copy them using Windows as fast as I can rip them.
There's a difference between a bad burn (unreadable) and a poor quality burn. I get the odd bad burn too, but I also weed out the low quality ones. I don't always burn at maximum speed. Having run lots of burn quality tests, I know some of my older Pioneer burners burn to Verbatim better at 12x, while the newer ones burn just as well at 16x or more. The Samsung burner doesn't do well with Verbatim DVD+R, but it comes close to matching the Pioneers with DVD-R. I usually don't bother checking the DVDs I burn for other people. Like you when it's for someone else, whatever the quality, it's good enough. Most of the discs I burn are for myself though, so I do check them. If every disc I burned was the same quality, why would I keep running a burn quality test each time? Think about it.....
