  1. Hi.

    I'm a newbie; i want to know how much HDD does a 20-minutes DCP need? (approx)

    Interop - 1920-1080 - 24fps - 2 audio channels

    Thanks.

    if you are referring to a digital cinema package, it depends on the bitrate like any other video. it can be up to 250mb/s. so find your bitrate and do the multiplication. bitrate x time = size for a max of about 38Gb.

    20 minutes = 20 * 60 = 1200 seconds.

    DCP commonly uses:
    Picture/Video - JPEG2000-compressed 2k TIFF files with 12bpc @24fps
    Audio - BWF LPCM 24bit 48kHz 5.1ch
    optional subtitle files
    All managed by MXF container.

    V = 2048 * 1080 * 24 * 12 * 3 = 1911029760bits/sec = 1822.5Mbps, compressed with JP2k down to ~250Mbps (~8:1 compression)
    A = 24 * 48000 * 5.1 = 5.60Mbps

    With overhead, you're talking <=260Mbps.
    260 * 1200 / 8 = 39GB (Bytes, not bits aedipuss. I think yours was a typo).

    @sergeiEV, since your audio is 2ch instead of 5.1 and since your master resolution is 1920x1080 instead of 2048x1080, your total will be a little bit smaller. But if you go with the Max 39GB as your target, you have plenty of room.

    Of course, that doesn't count any intermediate or alternate files. Don't know why you were asking, unless maybe to see if it could fit on a Flash drive? If so, you could maybe get it on a 32GB sized one. I would NOT skimp by trying to go lower (16, 8). And 64GB is probably overkill (and extra expensive).

    If you were wanting to put this on an optical disc, you'd want to use either a SL (23.3GB) or DL (46.6) BD disc.

    yes, but isn't there a standard for bitrate? as in Interop 1920x1080. (i'm not reffering to CBR though.)
    and i said approax.

    so 38, 39 won't fit in a 36 flash then, right? the HDD should support usb2 or CRU or eSata.
    what's to choose?

    and since you seem to know about DCPs; do you think i can make a dcp at home? my master video is smaller in dimensions (it's 720p). the thing is i can't have a TQC (quality check) because there is no dcp projector in my reach. so do you think it's risky?
    Thanks.
