  1. Does anyone know a code or mod or something to make a Vizio VBR122 region free? It's really only DVDs I need to be region free. There's a few shows on DVD I want to buy that have volumes that were only released in other countries and I'd really love to be able to own the entire series.

If you are in the U.S. you also have the PAL video format to get around as well.

This is a BluRay player. These days it's hard enough to find even DVD players that can be unlocked. You can count on one hand the number of BluRay players that can be unlocked and I've never heard of Vizio being one of those. Sorry.

You can rip foreign DVDs and reburn them as that will remove region coding, but your player will need to be able to do something sensible if the video on the DVDs is PAL (as hech54 points out).

  4. Hmm, dang. Thanks anyway, though. I might just spring for a new player from this site. Can anyone recommend a good one?

Most of those players are listed as region free for DVD only.....not BluRay
Most of those players say NOTHING about whether they can convert PAL to NTSC.....so you are still stuck
    buying an extra in-line converter.

Do yourself a favor and watch what you have on a computer.....computers don't care about PAL or NTSC....and the region code problem is easily taken care of. Then.....stop buying import discs.....especially Blu Ray.

  6. Actually, my laptop only lets me change the region code 6 times and then it permanently locks. DVDs are really the only thing I need to play region free, and the player I'm looking at says it does convert PAL to NTSC.

There are some free tools that make your computer ignore region codes.

If that website says that the player has the ability to convert between PAL and NTSC then that player always had that ability. It was nothing that World-Import did to the machine. Keep that in mind when you look at their prices.

No need to change the region code on your computer's DVD drive. Run a driver-level decrypter to remove encryption and region at the same time. It will do it on the fly, i.e. you don't need to rip to hard drive first.

DVDFabPasskey "Lite" (free version) can do this for you. All DVDs except those with the very latest copy protections.

DVD43 is another free driver-level decrypter. Not updated often, so again, latest copy protections may be a problem.

AnyDVD or the regular (pay version) of DVDFabPasskey if you simply must immediately buy discs with newest protections when they're released.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

If you can live with a DVD only player, the Philips DVP3560 is still able to be unlocked. Philips has to officially deny this, but I bought one last year and the unlock instructions we have on this very website still worked. Best Buy has stopped selling this player (that's where I bought it) so you'll have to see about getting it elsewhere. Pioneer was making DVD players that could be unlocked but I don't keep up with Pioneer so I don't have any current models I know anything about. I think a few LG players might be able to be unlocked but you'll have to research this to find specific models.

If you don't mind to spend the money, Oppo makes expensive BluRay players that can be unlocked for DVD and BluRay playback. However, the unlock requires a hardware mod. Some resellers do this mod for you. Others expect you to buy the hardware and do it yourself. Oppo themselves will NOT do this mod for you.

Finally, please note that Sony and Samsung players sold in North America are essentially impossible to unlock and if you buy one of their current models you will never be able to unlock it. We had one unconfirmed report of one Samsung player that got unlocked in recent years and I personally do not have a lot of confidence in the trustworthiness of the person who posted about it (he was not a forum regular).
