Hello,
first i am huge newbie to the world of video editing/ripping/converting. I have read pages about it, but was not able to find an easy tutorial for understanding what i have to do... i'm totally lost in the complex setting of the tools i have tried :/
so i have a Philips TV (model 32pfl7606h), it was able to play a 3D video with the following infos :
- MKV files : AVC/Advanced Video Codec / Main@L4.0 (i post the full data obtained by below)
while it seems that another file with :
- MKV files : AVC/Advanced Video Codec / High@L5.1
do not play and i get an unsupported format message !!!
do you have any idea of what i had to do ?
so, i supposed that i have to change from High@L5.1 to Main@L4.0 ... and i googled on it, and read here, with not so much undestanding.
also both play ok on computer with VLC, and both are Side By Side 3D. I want to keep the Side By Side 3D while re-encoding from High@L5.1 to Main@L4.0.
i have checked and tried some tools that do inline editing of bytes (if i understand well) like H264LevelEditor ( http://coolsoft.altervista.org/h264leveleditor ) but it did not work for me. (i read about it from this post : https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/322620-x264-AVC-High-L5-1-to-High-L4-1-conversion )
so i think that i need to do a full re encoding, but... here is where i am not able to continue without your help...
please, is some one kindly enough to tell me what freeware (some post mentions XMedia Recode) to use to do the necessary re-encoding ? and what are the right settings to achieve that (this is where i'm stuck, it looks like very complicated) ?
from the tests i have made with some tools, i get many errors or even microsoft exceptions, for example :
mkvmerge => Erreur : Le fichier 'myfile.3D.H-SBS.1080p.264' est d'un type inconnu. (= unknown format)
unCropMKV 1.55 => [00:48:59] Video height not compliant (480/576/720/1080)!
thanks for any help,
best regards,

According to the manual, the TV doesn't support DTS audio in an MKV file so that could be the problem if you've changed the level and the file still won't play. Some players will play the video without audio while some just won't play the file at all if the audio is unsupported. If that's what's happening you could try converting only the audio. An encoder GUI such a ffcoder should make it easy, as you can tell it to copy the video stream while converting only the audio. There's many ways to do it, but maybe give ffcoder a shot. If the manual is correct you'll need to convert the audio to AAC, AC3 or MP3 (I'd use AAC). Try that first to see if you have any luck.
For the record, changing the level doesn't always work. It depends how the player checks the video before playing it. I think some will check the level and look no further, while some ignore the level and check for compliance (number of reference frames, that sort of thing). If you change the level but the video isn't actually compliant with the new level you'll still have problems, but it doesn't hurt to try.
PS. I've never worked with 3D MKVs so I can't help at all if the problem is 3D related. I assume side by side 3D would convert the same way as 2D video but if you have 3D problems, someone else may be able to help you there.Last edited by hello_hello; 24th Apr 2012 at 10:39.

hello Hello !
yes, you are right ! i did not notice that audio codec wasn't the same too ! So i will check that also ! Thank u
now i am trying to change level to 4.0 with MediaCoder and my computer is desesperatly slow (a very old), will need many many time... (and i try from scratch, it is too difficult for me to understand for now... so i hope that by default MediaCoder keep everything fine / unchanged as i only went to Video > CUDA and change Profile to Main and Level to 4.0 and clic start.
but tomorrow i will try to change only the audio to see, if it works. -
I guess you could also use MKVMergeGUI to resave the MKV without the audio and see if it'll play. If it does, then I guess the audio type is the problem.
-
so changing to level to 4.0 with MediaCoder ended with an error :
015
- Description: A muxer error is encountered
- Possible causes
- The selected muxer encounter an error when muxing transcoded elementary audio/video streams.
so, next (this evening) i will try the MKVMergueGui and ffcoder approach that you suggest (thank you !) before trying again MediaCoder

If MediaCoder was re-encoding the video then it could take ages. I've never used it so I've no idea what the error is about.
If you want to just work with a small section of video, use MKVMergeGUI's split function (under the Global tab) to resave the original MKV while splitting it into smaller pieces. -
well, yes i think i had tried to re encode it, but it did not work... and my computer is an oldie ^^
so, when removing the audio with MKVMergeGUI and resaving it as without audio, it is ok the video play !
BUT i 3D is lost, i only get side by side images and TV do not propose/recognise to go to 3D anymore.
BTW i cannot say if it is my operation / consequence or maybe MKVMergeGUI that has changed something wrong, or if it something else as without any editing it does not play at all. Can this be the level/profile things ? do not know either.
this is driving me mad.
EDIT: about the 3D, i have found that some people need to put a "SBS" inside filename, mine was containing ".H-SBS.", i have tried to change it to " SBS " with no success. Looks like H-SBS is for Half Side by Side, i think that my TV is capable to play it but i'm not sure. Well, this is so complicated :/ and weird
the other file that i have tested and play well in 3D with sound was named / containing "1080p Conv3d SbS FR AC3-AAC" changing the one that did not work to this did not do the trick. And so i wonder what is the meaning of the "Conv3d SbS"...Last edited by G30; 25th Apr 2012 at 12:51.
