This weekend we shot on a canon gl1 using wirless mics running through a mixing board and into the camera. When I played back the video, it sounded fine through the camera and the headphones. I hooked up the camera to a pinnacle dvc 100 with composite cables. when i went to capture the video it had a shrill pinging distorted noise to it. I switched to my other computer and installed the software there and tried again. It sounded fine then. The battery on the loaner gl1 was dying so i switched the mini dv to a samsung and wehn i went into the program, the noise was back and is on the tape now for playback on the camera. any ideas?

might be trying to play audio at the wrong bitrate. miniDV can be either 12 or 16 bit depending on the cam and setting it was recorded on. the samsung may not play it properly if it can't handle both.

bigger problem is that miniDV tapes need to be captured over firewire to the computer to get the original video. not a low quality composite line. the video and audio is digital on the tape, it makes no sense to play back composite analog and then convert to digital again.

Would firewire work? I recharged the original battery and replaced the tape in the gl1 and now it is playing fine.

s-vid can be a little better than composite but in no way captures anything near the original quality of the audio or video on the tape. it's DVavi at 25mbps with pcm audio. firewire add-in cards are cheap or find a friend with a firewire port to capture the tape for you.
