I have Win7 and an Acer slim tower. Is this the device I need to capture television? If so, which program do I use for capturing? It must be external due to the slim tower I have. I usually record football games (From Directv) on my DVD Recorder, but now I'm looking to bypass that step.

The Hauppauge USB-Live 2 is good hardware, but if you plan to use Windows Media Center, devices like that won't work. Windows 7 Media Center requires the use of analog capture devices with a tuner. The only tunerless USB capture deices that can work with Media Center are the Hauppauge HD-PVR and AVerMedia AVerTV USB HD DVR. They have plugins that make it appear that they have a digital tuner, and the H.264 transport stream they produce is output from the tuner.

The Hauppauge USB-Live 2 might work OK for timed recordings using WinTV 7, but I do not know for certain.

The other problem is controlling the satellite receiver. Hauppauge's software can do it, but it likely utilizes the built-in IR blaster most of their other products provide. The USB-Live 2 has no IR blaster.

Thanks for the reply. I will likely go with the other device (Hauppauge HD-PVR) you mentioned.

While the HD-PVR is great for HD recording (according to most members here who have one), there are a few things to be aware of. First, it will need to be power-cycled every few days. Second, the built-in IR blaster and included remote work fine with Hauppauge's software, but not Windows Media Center. For Windows Media Center you need an MCE remote and RC6 IR-receiver with IR-blaster.

    I have this one.

    This will also work

Hauppauge has a MCE plug-in available from its driver download page, but some people prefer to use this third-party plug in
