  1. Ive been reading up on the pv231 and it seems to be exactly what Im looking for. But I cant seem to find a place to buy it from that will ship to Australia.. anyone got any suggestions?

Also can any owners of the pv231 share their experiences with it?
Whats the quality of the standard VCD captures like?

The PV231 is the best mpeg capture card I've seen and used. You'll get a lot of info and places to buy it at skittelsen's place:

    http://steve.kittelsen.com/pv231/

You'll also find the best registry files to use with it.
I've read that Akida Computers in the U.S. is out of stock but there are identical cards with other brand names mentioned at skittelsen's. Other people are getting it directly from the manufacturer in China. All these urls are at skittelsen's.
    Good Luck

  3. Using the PV231 now, not the least dissatisfied...
    Nuff said.

ps: All I wanna know is how it fares against the Dazzle/Snazzi DVC.

  4. I bought a PV233 from Akida. Basically I'm not satisfied with the encoded video in VCD format. Maybe it is using different chip from PV231 as you can find out in :

    http://store.yahoo.com/akidacomputer/mpegencar.html

compared with the winbond chip used in PV233. Maybe I expect too much. To me, it's far worse compared to encoding done by TMPGEnc.

  9. You can order both the PV231 and PV233 from Provideo, Taiwan or Singapore, but there is a $30 shipping cost, so you will not save much money by ordering the card from Asia. The US reseller has a very good price (and no, I'm not working for Akaida Computers :)

Nothing has come along that will beat the quality of the PV231/233 cards. They both use the Windond chip, and tests I have done shows the PV23x video looks just as good as AVI captured video encoded by Tmpeg. The registry settings on my web site improves the blockiness during action video. During still video, there are no artifacts, no edge noise or moskito effect, which is normal with other VCD encoders. Again, VCD video is not DVD quality video, please remember that.

  10. umm.. the $90 USD i paid for the pv233 directly from provideo included shipping. it was $60 before shipping. akida has it for $115 without shipping.

    :o The best of all:-
You encode with uncompress avi, go to tmpge, encode with mpeg 2, then from digital mpeg2 you then convert to mpeg 1..

you will see the result...its like a dvd

  12. Just got my 231 in the mail Friday from Akida. I'm still playing with the registry settings and getting settled in. Thanks skittelsen for all the info and the web page. So are the settings on your web page the 'best' in your opinion overall, or are they optimized for a specific application? I'm looking at mostly converting old NTSC video tapes.
