  4. Many movies are wider than 16:9 (2.35:1 is common) and shouldn't fill a 16:9 screen. The Playbook's screen is about 1.7:1 so even a 16:9 (1.78:1) video shouldn't fill the screen.

Well, we're both kind of right - BBPlaybook OS is an Android-alike OS (built by RIM). IOW, it uses Linux as it's kernal, just like Android does. It even has an Android runtime (similar to Wine-for-Linux that allows Windows apps to run on Linux), so many Android apps will run unchanged on it.

That's what I was talking about. So, to repeat and revise my earlier question: Are you using the STOCK video player app to show the video, or are you using one of the MANY Android video player apps (like MoboPlayer) to show the video? What are it's settings?...

Yes, there should be some settings you can adjust. I'd look under the [Edit] or [Convert] menu items (don't use FMVC myself)...Likely you can create your own new "custom" presets.

But this brings up another point. Since you're using FMVC, you must have some additional steps involved in getting it to the PC and then to the BB Tablet that you didn't mention. Please describe those steps as well?
