Newbie needs lots of help!!

Well I finally have a few things downloaded and am ready to go. I have made a few mpegs to vcds and know am trying to make some movies for my player. i have divx code 3 and 5, and the one for mpeg 2. I also have Tmpg to convert. My first problem I run into is on one of the movies when i run it through to convert and select borth audio and video, it keeps an all black screen and i only have audio? How do I fix this? Next ? every other one of my avi files when i try to load them into TMPg also give me the unsupported error? How do I fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure about part 1,but for part 2 try extracting audio as WAV using Virtualdub then use resulting Wav as audio source in TMPGE
