I did burn a DVD (five .VOB files), but it's only playable, file by file, on the PC

How can I burn it for the DVD player?

I have the files in the original >VOB, and converted to .mp4.

What does the file/folder structure on the disc look like? A properly-authored DVD-Video disc will have the structure seen here: DVD File/Folder structure

Burning itself should always be done with imgburn. You load the video_ts folder into it and then burn.

If you need to reauthor it you could use dvd shrink. Even though its old and not updated anymore if its already decrypted or if its a home made dvd it will work just fine. You can rearrange it how you need it to be and it can spit out a new video_ts folder for burning.

Or you can totally reauthor it with a program like avstodvd. Make a new dvd from scratch.

The bit about the mp4 - mp4 has nothing to do with an actual dvd that you would make and burn to play in a regular dvd player. Read the link ai haibara posted.

Now you should be specific if you are trying to play mp4 files ON the dvd player. Then it is more complicated. As dvd players will only play standard def files and the mp4 might be h264 video and I don't know if dvd players can play h264 video - I"m sure there are some but I don't the models that do. But they won't play high def mp4s and they have to meet the specific requirements of that player. Also they would need to be burned as data onto the dvd. THen the player would read the files off the disc.

For playing on the computer use vlc or mpchc. You can play the dvd from the folder off the harddrive and it should play it as if it were a physical disc and start at the menu. Assuming it has a menu that is. It would treat the video_ts folder like an actual disc.

Please spell it out a little more since you mentioned mp4. That might complicate matters a little. Otherwise use imgburn to burn the dvd. Use dvdshrink or avstodvd to create a new dvd folder if you need to do something different with it (like a new menu or chapter points - fyi dvdshrink can't make menus or chapter points avstodvd can).

Sorry if this is more detail than you wanted to know. Be specific about what you want to do and we can whittle it down to the basics.

    OK.
I recorded a TV show, and then trimmed the first and last segments (VTS_01_7.VOB). Since my usual trimmer doesn't do .VOB, I converted them to .mp4. I now have a total of 5 segments, in each, .VOB and .mp4.

I don't understand what Ai Haibara means by structure. These 5 segments, which I numbered 10-VTS_01_5.VOB, 11-VTS
_01_6.VOB, etc. are in a regular folder. Same for the .mp4. And these folders are in "Video" on my PC.

I went to imgburn, and that seems to refer to images, and they do not list either .VOB or .mp4 as supported files.
Nor was the first thread below helpful. The whole TV show was less than an hour.

I HAVE burned DVDs with text and/or pictures with AShampoo, but as I mentioned earlier, when I burned this folder with the .VOB files, I could play the DVD on my PC, but only one file at the time, i.e. had to click for the following file. And it did not play on my DVD player.

I did not really understand everything that yoda313 said, but hope that I've made myself more clear now.

    Thank you.

What did you use to record the tv shows?

What did you use to trim the segments?

    We're getting there.

You should author the vob files into a new video_ts folder. Use avstodvd to do this. The video_ts folder contains ifo, bup and vob files that dvd players need in order to play a dvd properly.

You shouldn't use your mp4s that you created as these aren't your original sources (edit - also dvds use mpeg2 which are what vobs really are - they are just a special container for mpeg2 video that is needed to make dvds). There are mpeg cutters available that can read mpg and vob files and let you cut and save the vobs in there original format without changing it. mpg2cut2 is one such program (freeware).

From there take your cut files and load them into avstodvd. You can create your dvd however you want. It can be as simple as having them play sequentially or you can create individual titles so each cut segment acts like its own video.

There are guides for avstodvd on this website to do just about anything you want with it.

For imgburn you can burn folders. You would go to the "write files/folders to disc" button and then select the video_ts folder that you made with avstodvd. It will then burn it for you.

edit - this is for future information should you wish to know what a dvd structure is (ie this is what is inside a properly authored - ie created - dvd folder that is labeled video_ts:

    VIDEO_TS VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
The first video play item, IFO, usally a copyright notice or a menu
VIDEO_TS.VOB The first video play item, VOB
    VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO Title Set 01, IFO, usually the main movie
VTS_01_0.VOB Title Set 01, VOB 0, the menu for this title
VTS_01_1.VOB Title Set 01, VOB 1, the video for this title
VTS_01_2.VOB Title Set 01, VOB 2, if larger than 1 GB it will be splitted into several vobs
    VTS_01_3.VOB Title Set 01, VOB 3
VTS_01_4.VOB Title Set 01, VOB 4, up to 10(0-9) VOB files if necassary
    VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO Title Set 02, IFO, usually movie extras
VTS_02_0.VOB Title Set 02, VOB 0, the menu for this title
VTS_02_1.VOB Title Set 02, VOB 1, the video for this title
    VTS_xx_x.BUP
    VTS_xx_x.IFO And so on
    VTS_xx_x.VOB
    VTS_xx_x.VOB
VTS_99_9.VOB Up to 99(1-99) titles with max 10(0-9) VOB files each

This was the pertinent information that ai haibara was linking to.

    I'm afraid I still don't understand.

I downloaded avstodvd and got the Prism Video File Converter Plus.
I made a new folder in my Documents, VIDEO_TS.IFO, and dragged my five .VOB files in there.
I downloaded imgburn, and then it prompted me to dowbnload Infrarecorder - which I did.
Now, having ImageBurn in front of me, I browsed to the VIDEO_TS.IFO file, clicked "create DVD file, but it doesn't prompt me to continue.
So I went to Infrarecorder, went to Action, Burn Image (though it's really not an image but a movie), but it only has files of type .iso, .cue, and .img

Could you possibly give me step by step instructions?

    Many thanks.

I am glad you are putting forth the effort. That makes it easier to work with you. Sometimes people just want it done for them.

Unfortunately after a bit of searching on this website I haven't found a basic guide for avstodvd. However avstodvd does come with a pretty comprehensive help menu. I would start there.

There is a huge avstodvd support thread on this website. However it is mostly too technical for a beginner. I think it mostly details updates to each version that has been released.

    ------------

Also simply making a video_ts folder yourself and sticking the vobs in it won't work. Well let me say it won't work a 100% of the time. YOu might fluke it and get a dvd player to recognize it but it won't be in the proper structure.
