  1. Hi

I'm in the UK & live in a 3 storey house. My computer (hardwired to wireless Netgear DGN2000 router) is at the top of the house & there are a number of laptops/ipads/games consoles etc. dotted around.

Most of them work ok, but the biggest problem is that my son's Xbox is at the bottom of the house and really struggles to get a wifi signal from the router.

I am considering getting Homeplugs to sort this connection out.

Am I right in thinking that I leave everything as it is and plug one Homeplug into a port on the router (via ethernet cable), plug that Homeplug into a mains socket, then plug another Homeplug into the mains at the bottom of the house?

    My other queries are:

Would the 85mbps Homeplug be sufficient or should I get a 200mbps or above?

Does it matter a huge amount if I plug the first Homeplug into a multi extension mains socket and the second Homeplug into a multi extension socket at the bottom of the house, and run an ethernet cable to the Xbox from that Homeplug?

The top of the house is a roof extension, and I'm not sure if the top of the house is on the same mains circuit as the bottom of the house - will that make a difference? We do have cordless house phones (one at the bottom & one at the top of the house) and they both work fine, if that is anything to go by!

The house is not old (I think it was built between 10 & 15 years ago).

    Any advice is welcome, thanks.

    Ian

    1: Yes
2: Generally the higher the mbps the better.
3: You mean multi socket wall plate ... fine, just don't connect fan heaters as they can cause interference.
2: Yes. to reduce the chances of problems both should be attached to the same power line running through the building.

  4. Oh, finally (possibly) ....

The "bottom of the house" homeplug will be connected by ethernet cable to my son's Xbox - can I use any type of ethernet cable, or do I have to go to a 5e or higher (or lower)?

    Thanks
