I understand, DB83. I wasn't aware that the O.P. was still using the old gear, I thought the idea was to use something better. That being the case, MPEG is the only option and the consequences will just have to be accepted for better or worse (worse being more likely). I've worked with bad MPEG captures; it is nothing but a headache but it can done -- with a proper conversion to AVI. Color Correction in Vegas is OK, but repairing artifacts is something else. I don't believe Vegas can compete with Avisynth in that regard, though Vegas can work other tricks that are nearly impossible with Avisynth.

Using huffyuv or Lagarith with MPEG capture is a waste of time. I'm surprised the system didn't choke on that idea. Plain uncompressed AVI could be used as far as that goes, but the space requirements are a hassle. It's a shame Asesinato wants to use the same gear. Ah, well . . .

  2. I remember i read somewhere that there is way to bypass the hardware encoder and use it as software card ( without the use of the mpeg2 compression ) but i don't remember where

Graphstudio come to mind but at the same time it's probably just a mpeg compression> software encode scheme
My guess is the built-in chip encode in mpeg no matter what, he should try though.

If there is no choice because of the adapter encoding, then mpeg2 is the best way. But adding Lagarith or huffyuv is a waste. It might have affected the clip's behavior later in VirtualDub. I have no idea what those compressors would do with an mpeg2, but there would be no further compression. MPEG2 is already compressed.

  5. Isn't the PVR-500 basically two PVR-150s on a single card? Hauppuage doesn't admit to it but he PVR-150 can capture raw YUV without MPG compression with the right software. I would guess the PVR-500 can too.

I thought as much, jagabo, and I know I saw a post describing how it's done. I spent almost two hours looking for it about a week ago. Maybe it was doom9, not videohelp? I'm in doom9 now, trying to learn at least a little of the Avisynth that you know (fat chance! ). I'll keep looking.

    yes it is

I think that all hardware capture cards can do. That is because the hardware mpeg2 chip is like an postprocess step on the card and it is almost identically with the rest components with the non hardware cards, basically it is just and i/o add on to the card (in cards without the hardware mpeg chip i/o is communicating with the processor of the PC and it is transferring in and out instructions then it is job on the software ( mpeg or any other to do the job of encoding and pass that information back to the card ) in hardware cards all that is done within the cards, that why it slower to encode real time software because besides the cpu speed is important also the i/o communication
between the encoder and the rest of the chips.

If there is "right" software it will instruct the card just to pass the info to the i/o bus and suppress the mpeg encoder on the card with going strait to the pc i/o in this case pci so you get the same result as using only software card ( without even knowing that there is hardware mpeg encoder ).
I know this idea long time ago but I'm just not smart enough to build such "software"
