I know it's almost impossible to remove hardcoded subtitles. But I would like to know how can I figure out if a subtitle is hardcoded/embedded in a video file or not.
And if not, I understand it is possible to remove it, right?

URGENT is everything someone INCOMPETENT did not ON TIME and want you KILL yourself to do in RECORD time.

You don't say what format your video is in, so everything is just a guess. Somewhere in your container is a raw video file. Extract that and see if the subtitles are in it. If so, they are hardcoded.
It is not impossible to remove them, but it is very much IMPRACTICAL to do so.ICBM target coordinates:

There's always MediaInfo. It'll list subtitle streams in a video, as long as they're not hardsubbed. Of course, if whatever player you're using supports it, and/or you're using DirectVobSub, you can also try switching the subtitles off.
...and if the subtitles look like they're part of the video image, are perhaps more pixelated/blurred on the edges than you'd expect a soft-subtitle renderer to have the subtitles look, they may be hardsubbed. If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
