Help with Virtualdub and Pinnacle MovieBox 710-USB

Hi,

Does anyone have experience using the MovieBox 710USB and Virtualdub?

Vdub recognizes the MBox, but I can't capture from a Hi8 camcorder to AVI with out lots of dropped frames and video/audio sync issues. I see lots of recommendations about capturing using the Hufyuv codec, but I don't see it as an option in Vdub.

Using the bundled Pinnacle Studio 15 I can capture to MPEG2, but still have problems with AVI.

VirtualVCR crashes on my system and never starts.

I've tried this with turning everything off using msconfig and disabling my virus scanner (Avira).

My system:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual 3800+, 2.01 Ghz, 3.5 GB RAM,
Capturing to second physical drive. The directory is compressed. Is this a problem?

Somehow I missed that the codec has to be installed on it's own. Once installed, it shows up in Virtualdub.

Are codecs stand alone windows apps that are called by other apps? I always thought codecs were part of a particular app.

Codecs are still a bit confusing to me but there are codecs(I believe identified with the ending "VFW" - Video For Windows) that do not need to be installed in each individual app that you want to use it in.
