Your video source file size doesn't matter when you are making a DVD-video. It's because you are converting the video to another format that requires a different(usually bigger) file size than your source video.

What it is the total video running time? You should be able to fit around 4 hours on a dual layer dvdr with good quality.

  3. You'd expect Nero to do things automatically, personally I don't know if it does, never used the StartSmart thingy. I always just run the program I need for the task; here I would use NeroVision and Recode.

Assuming you're done with creating your DVD and you're getting a warning it will exceed the disk capacity, carry on with outputing the DVD, but set the target to a folder on the HDD. Once it's done, start Recode and select the first option in the menu, click the import button and find the folder you outputted to earlier. Make sure to change the fit to size to DVD9 (lower right hand corner), click next, set your burner as the target and check the 2 bottom boxes (never check the burn on the fly box).

Nero is set to re-encode your video files which are close to 3 hours so they won't fit at the bitrate nero is using, they look like mpg1 which don't need to be re-encoded cause they are already dvd compliant and would easily fit a 4.37 dvd.

Use mediainfo on the files and post the results.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

  6. As you can see on your picture (notice you are using Nero Vision), you were burning to the DVD drive and you probably had a single layer disk in the drive, hence the 9.92 out of 4.38 thing. Click on write to hard disk folder and choose a folder to write to.

Start Nero Recode and click the first option in the menu, then click import DVD, set the fit to size to DVD 9 (bottom right hand corner of window), put a dual layer blank DVD in the burner, click the next button. On the next page put a check mark in the 2 bottom boxes (never put one in the burn on the fly box).
