    Hi all,

I am trying to add permanent subtitles to a MKV file using mkvmerge.
I am selecting a MKV file and adding an SRT file.
The movies plays fine on my computer but on my TV the movie does not play at all and I get a message that the file type is not supported. before I add a subtitle file and/or encode the movie with mkvmerge, the TV plays the movie fine.

    Any help????

    Thanks.

Or it could just be that you have forgot to disable header compression in mkvmergegui, under file->options and select disable header compression removal. Then restart mkvmergegui and add your mkv and srt. But it wont create permanent subtitles in the mkv...but it might work anyway.

I used freemake video converter to do the same with a MKV file and it works very nicely except for one issue if you have 2 lines of subtitles the bottom line overlaps the frame line and on 3 modern LED TV half the bottom line is obscured. The program doesn't have any facility to raise the subs further up into the picture area. If you were watching on a CTR TV I suspect both lines would be obscured. Pity as it is a quick and simple program to work with. I have emailed the company and did get a reply that they will look into it sometime....

I not sure if this will work but I am going to experiment converting the srt format into ass that gioves a bit more flexibility and maybe I can create a set that will be higher in the video ? Any thoughts anyone on that appreciated....

  5. Any converter that allows you to use AviSynth scripts, you can use VSFilter to "burn in" the subtitles. See docs on TextSub() for adjusting the style of the subs. Alternatively, you can use AviAddXSubs to create idx/sub subtitles with control of font, border thickness, placement etc... then add them using the VobSub() function.

To see how it will look before encoding you can use AvsPMod or another AviSynth tool that has a preview function.

edit: whoops! Forgot the vsfilter docs page:
