yeah Windows XP thinks my DVD-ROM is a CD-ROM to but DVD's play fine on it.

It changes when u put a DVD in, it will say it's a DVD-ROM drive.

This is actually a good feaute cause some older games will try to spin up the CD, but see a DVD rom and not do neything.

2 of my games didn't work until i got XP n it treated my drive as a CD-ROM

yes but that is really not my problem, it simply wont read any dvds anymore. If you put a dvd in your cd drive watch what happens. The drivegoes mad in a vain attempt to read the disc. This is what is happening to me!!!

Have you installed the chipset controllers for your motherboard when you have installed WINXP. If you have not or they are not the correct ones then your IDE controllers might not be set up correctly.

If you have installed the correct drivers, make sure that you have enabled the drive as DMA.

If you have done all of these, then it might be purely the case that the drive is defective or dirty. get a laser cleaning cd to clean the laser or replace the drive.

  11. baker:

Is the DVD drive set up as a master or slave device? If that is set the wrong way, the drive will not function correctly.

Open your machine up and look at the cable connected to your DVD drive. Is there any other disk drive (hard drive, CDROM, etc) connected to the same cable? If there is, then there's a good chance the drive should be set up as a slave drive. If the DVD drive is the only drive on that cable, then you should set it up as a master drive.

On the back of the DVD drive, right beside the cable connecter, is a jumper to tell the DVD drive what it should be, master or slave. Set this correctly (after reading my previous paragraph) and restart your system.

  14. 2 things.. first.. may be an ASPI layer issue.. this problem with win2k/xp causes them to have probs with dvdroms

free aspi driver here -> ftp://ftp.nero.com/wnaspi32.dll
    (its free)

put it in your system32 folder

    reboot

second thing is - it is possible for drive to fail as dvd and work as cdrom because dvds are read (internally) different with the laser than cdroms.. anyways.. i highly suspect its your aspi layer.. it happens with xp.. try that driver

well it seems that this is a common thing with samsung drives. apparently their dvd lasers only last about a year than die out!!

I will now try that driver, thanks!!

I have a Samsung VCR that went bad after 3 months, and I have 2 Samsung DVD players that went bad after about 6 months. I get this catalog in the mail every other month or so and they sell a lot of refurbished items. I noticed that many of them were Samsung products. I have a Samsung monitor though and it hasn't went bad (yet).
