  1. hi there there a video converter for mp4 to WebM and OGV for stupid people like me?

I have come across one but the output quality is poor.

Do I just need to wait a few weekes before there become more widespread?

    Many thanks.

    Hi
webm files contain vp8 and vorbis streams.
ogv files contain theora and vorbis (and other) streams.

Both of these be created using VLC or WinFF when they are set up correctly.

  3. I tested AutoWebM v.0.30.30, http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1410972 it was the only GUI encoder with 2pass I could find couple of months back, I had to set Target format to IVFenc and IVF to make 2pass work, and then mux streams with MKVmerge,
advantage of that one is that you can edit command line that program creates,

results are nothing special if one is used to x264, I tried to compare x.264 Baseline@level 3.0 lower bitrates and I think it looked still better than webM,
other problem I see, why webM doesn't support build in subtitles ? Mp4 can do that, jwplayer reads them. It is a container , matroska, that calls for that, why was it not implemented.

  4. Initial WebM release does not support subtitles.
    • WHATWG / W3C RFC will release guidance on subtitles and other overlays in HTML5 <video> in the near future. WebM intends to follow that guidance. Ref: WebVTT.
    source: http://www.webmproject.org/code/specs/container/

So once WebVTT contains "WebVTT cue text rendering rules" and other stuff related to text tracks it's probably more a question how badly people want subtitles inside webm and how much they complain about the missing support for it to the webm guys,.. but even if the webm folks support it, the players/decoders need to support the format and you probably need tools to convert and create such subtitles,...
-> I wouldn't hold my breath for it,...

    .
    Hi
With VLC use the "Convert Wizard".
Tutorial for ogv is here ---> http://en.flossmanuals.net/ogg-theora/encoding/vlc/
The process is similar for webm.
With both of these the video and audio bitrates can be tweaked by clicking on the spanner/screwdriver icon.
