Since V2M reports the streams as being 352x480, I'm inclined to think that it's 352 and not 704 or 720. I just tried it with another DVD (actual movie) and it's reporting 720 for that. Basically, I'm thinking that the DVD (my recordings) really is 352 even though it'd be nice if it were 720.
Thanks, but my sources are reliable.

I mis-typed the model number. lacywest's profile shows he has a Panasonic DMR-EZ27K, which is in the same series as the DVD recorder you have. All the recorders in the series use the same resolutions and bitrates for LP mode recordings. Either you used EP mode for that recording or you made a different mistake when doing your comparison.

With all due respect, my results prove those sources to be wrong.

If you aren't doing a test/comparison with the same data, then it's possible to get results that mislead you into wrong conclusions. Multiple times I have looked at the DVD streams with V2M and each time they tell me 352x480. MI continues to report 720 to me for both to MPG's generated by V2M as well as the VOB's. If you believe I am mistaken, then I again offer for you to see for yourself with the same data. If you don't want to, that's fine. But if you're not going to, then you will just need to take my word for it that I'm providing you with accurate information. Telling me that I'm wrong won't suddenly make things change on my end.

  3. Hi , Nator, still pulling your hair out? Only joking!

I should have been more precise with what I meant, but I thought you would have realized what I meant. When I tried it with VRD, I did the cuts as I normally would have and then saved it to a new (finalized) file. When playing that file, if I let it play without skipping at all, the timing is the same as one of the encoded files from VMW5. However, in that same file, if I navigate at all, the timing is off.
Have you tried using QuickStream Fix?

I already have looked at 8 VOB files with known resolutions and know how to read. I have a slow DSL connection and I am unwilling to wait hours downloading another file. I am done here. Let VOB2MPG's author look at the VOB file.

  5. Hi Nator,

It's just the entire thing is out of sync (video/audio are synced together just fine, what I see matches what I hear). Some places, it's roughly 9 or 10 seconds off/behind, while other places is maybe only 2 seconds off.

Since this happens regardless of using VRD or ME3, I'm going to say that it's likely not a bug in either software but something in the stream that is causing it. If it was just one editor giving me this result but not the other, then I'd believe it's the editor. I'm sure you'll agree that it makes sense.
It makes sense if the time stamps are jumbled. Did you try running the QuickStream Fix utilty in VideoRedo?

Yeah, I had tried that and had even tried changing some of the VRD options to see if something might encourage it to do something to put a fix in the stream. I'm only guessing that there is some sort of time encoded in the stream, so if I click somewhere randomly, it'll report the time I'm at as opposed to the player just guessing at it based on where the seek bar is at. I know that there are references to timecodes and such but as I am not an expert on video files, there's a chance that could mean something other than what I'm thinking.

While I'm thinking about this.. Would TMPGEnc 2.5 (free) be any good at editing the MPG files that V2M produces? I mean as far as clipping out the commercials and then resaving without any (or much) re-encoding. Tight budget here.

  7. Don't know about 2.5. Don't like their software to be honest. Used it many, many moons ago when there was little else to compete.
You have tried loading the .vobs from the disc and editing them in VideoRedo itself, saving as a .ts and NOT an mpeg? The reason being, if you actually do this through the 'Joiner' option it automatically performs a stream fix as it saves. Save the .ts file THEN do your editing on this new file.

Edit: edited this post because what I actually said, wasn't what I meant! Lol.

There is no reason to actually convert, in fact it's a bad idea as you are actually shifting formats, even if the the file types are related.
Just now tried opening with VRD and saving as an MPEG (vs V2M then editing and saving) and even opted to create a DVD with it and same thing both times. So that tells me that V2M is definitely not creating the issue.

Couldn't see how to save as a VOB but did notice the MKV option and tried that. Works perfectly. Was able to navigate to the specific location and saw what should be there and on top of that, can jump to cut points. w00t!

Thanks for pointing that out. Now if only there was a way to put it into a format that most players would understand. (like DivX) That'll be a later-on type deal though. Since I was trying to go for MKV before hand anyways, this actually works out, with the exception that I'm not getting any compression on it. Any drawbacks to doing it this way, where it's pulling the episode, editing it then spitting it out in MKV format?

  9. I know. I edited my post above. I was thinking along the lines of .ts being lossless so you might get a direct stream copy and fix in one go. Just the way my mind works sometimes. I know what I meant, even if no-one else could make sense of it!

Edit: there is no disadvantage. There are guides on here on how to compress MKV back to MKV container. Just use the search box at top of page.XviD4PSP will convert to any format. It can be a bit slow but the output (depending on the settings you choose) can be exceptional. It's one of my favorite converters. Glad you got there in the end.

When I chose .ts it wouldn't let me do chapter skipping. Is there any loss or drawbacks to doing it to MKV (MPEG2)?

Yes ... I have the EZ17 and EZ27 and the LP recording mode is not bad ... I tested it a few years ago recording the Olympics.
But some of my DVD-RAM disks are getting old and have scratches ... so I record at XP but usually to not miss anything of a TV Show I'm recording ... I use FR ... and start the recording a few minutes early and end the recording a few minutes after the show has ended.

By doing it this way .. if a scratch is on the DVD or a bad spot ... it will record over it really fast and wont be too bad in seeing the glitch when playing back the recording.

As for using TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5 ... I find it does a nice job opening and editing ... wtv videos ... that I've created with WIN 7 media center.

And I was using VRD for opening M2TS videos ... I had audio sync problems using other programs ... but I've found that TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5 ... also does just fine too.

I use TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5 to make a mpg file with a high bitrate and then use ... AutoGK ... to make a AVI video file ... works for me ... resolution is usually set for 624 x 352 ... but with AutoGK ... I just set the resolution for a 624 width and AUTOGK ... does the rest.
