I'm trying to watch an MKV file using Media Player Classic, however, the audio sync is waay off. After experimenting with MPC's audio time shift option, I discovered if I get the audio close to perfect sync, it might be out of sync in the next scene. We're talking several seconds, or more! Maybe related, but I noticed the video seems to stumble or pause occasionally. I'm not sure if that's MPC's way of implementing the audio shift, or if there's a problem with the file, or I don't have the right codec.

Or perhaps I extracted the file incorrectly. This is the first time I've experienced this particular situation, but the torrent created 64 RAR files, about 50MB each. I used an old utility called 7-zip File Manger, which extracted and combined all those files into a single mkv file.

I don't think there's a problem with the original file because the source website has several positive comments. In fact, the only negative was someone (like me) who apparently didn't understand how to deal with the split RAR files.

A you can see, I'm a real novice at this, although someone technical otherwise. Would appreciate some help.

Try MPCHC (if you aren't already using it) and VLC and SMPlayer and see how they work.

    Thanks for your reply.

Gosh, I'm still using v1.4 (MPCHC). I noticed the latest version is 1.6. l'll download and try that tomorrow. Do you know if I need to uninstall the old version first, or will the new version properly upgrade the old version?

+1 on vlc and smplayer. Especially the latter. VLC has the reputation as the one that plays anything but smplayer is better.

I yanked mpc-hc because it uses non microsoft codecs and filters that I won't use anymore. Plus on less than dvd quality video it stinks. And the settings stink too.

BTW ... those user comments on those sites you refer to are absolutely useless. I don't know how many times I've seen video those idiots rated 10/10 that was highly pixelated, out of sync, choppy, you name it. Sorry, but it's true.

I installed smplayer this evening and the audio sync and choppy video issues disappeared. It even defaulted to a shadow font on the subtitles... looks awesome! Thanks for the advice!
