  1. So far I've been using VLC for everything as it is just simple and plays everything that I needed it too.

Now I'm having problems playing h254 avi files?

On vlc, the video plays fine but the sound sounds like it's sped up 3x. So for the an hour long video, the sound ends at 20 minutes.

On windows media player, the sound plays fine like normal. (just video doesn't show but i'm guessing i just need to update it)

On tv, (plugged by usb) both the video and sound play perfectly)

I really want to keep using VLC, and it seems that vlc plays h264, so what is going on?

Can I get some help on how to fix this issue?

    Thank you.

Are you using latest vlc 2.0?
Did it work with older versions?

And I would go the vlc support forum and ask. http://forum.videolan.org/

    I'd try their forum too.

h.264 in an avi container seems to be an unusual and problematic format. You may need to install ffdshow.

    Which I wouldn't do personally.

I had a dvd encoding program that required it but I uninstalled it, plus ffdshow and haali and all that 3rd party stuff. Better programs like vcl and smplayer (which is my preference for video though I use both) work a lot better without all the video codecs/filters pointed away from directx. In fact, I couldn't really get a feeling for how to use the smplayer video settings until I tossed that 3rd party junk and it was rendering video properly.

So I'd be interested in whether you can play an h.264 avi in vlc or smplayer too. However, at this point I think I'd rather convert with avidemux than install ffdshow or any of those other 3rd party codecs. Microsoft specifically recommends not installing any of them with win7, and they're right.

  4. yeah the latest vlc doesn't work either.

it does play some h264 avi files but some it doesn't work.. so maybe it is just the files issue with some of the files.

Is avidemux the easiest way to convert the file to make it playable like standard video file?

Try open the avi in avidemux, under audio and video choose copy, under format choose mkv, save as a .mkv. Try play it.

If avidemux can't open it, it might be corrupt.

I should have been more specific recommending avidemux as a converter ... it's not the easiest tool out there but for weird jobs, it's hard to beat. Plus it'll work with weird codecs really well.
