scan movies for errors

is there a utility which can scan avi. mpeg, and all other types of movies. for errors before converting

For mpeg2 there is videoredo's quickstream fix (not only scan, but tries to fix)

I don't know of any others that work ok or consistently for other file types

No.

VideoReDo only tries to fix problems with dropped frames. That's it. There are no tools that can do what you want.
