I would like to research DVD Authoring software, commercial and freeware, that is capable of including forced subtitles. By that I mean, a group of aliens are chatting together in their made up language and the translation is burned into the video and cannot be turned off. In addition there would be both English and Indonesian soft, switchable, subtitles. Hopefully there is a free or cheap package and not a professional high end $$$ package available. Most of the popular ones that pop up from time to time on this forum like ConvertXtoDVD or DVDFlick will NOT do what I need.

you've got your terms mixed up. hard-encoded subs are encoded into the video when it is rendered and it has nothing to do with authoring. they are there whether or not the video is authored, and show up if you play the mpeg-2 before authoring.

I don't care about the semantics all I want to do is permanently burn into the video file subtitles for 5 scenes within the film that have a bunch of Aliens talking. Whatever you wish to call the subs they should be part of the vision and impossible to turn off. I think that would be the obvious comprehension on reading the context in my original post. As well as these permanent subs there will be 2 switchable languages.

So what I'm after is a few brand names of full DVD Producing/Authoring software that will cover our needs. ie in the production we can permanently burn in the Alien "speak" and then in the same software package go on to include the 2 language files and spit out a VIDEO_TS folder containing all the DVD conforming files.

  4. You would probably have to hardcode the subs separately from authoring, as it requires re-encoding. Once you have the "alien" subs embedded in the video, you can take it into your authoring software and add your selectable subs, menus etc. No authoring package will "hardcode" subs AFAIK.

Nice attitude with someone whos trying to help Like he said, you have the terms mixed up. This is done with the editor of you choice, not the authoring tool.

Even though you should. "Playing with words" can be a very-efficient way to fool a citizen.

permanently burn means you reencode the audio with the subs in...end of discussion. however, you could use pgcedit and set a forced flag in the subs instead.

what is obvious is that you are an a$$.

you come here looking for help and you have the nerve to cop an attitude when someone calls you out for not even bothering to figure out what the hell you are asking for?

this isn't about semantics and all about basic understanding. forced subs are entirely different than hard subs. a couple minutes on google would have told you that.

if you can't be bothered to do that, and then have the nerve to cop an attitude, then i don't see why anybody here should help you.

  10. And once you've burned in the subs you want, most authoring programs have the ability to add in two sets of subs so that they're selectable. Even the free ones. Try Muxman.

Although some (few) authoring programs also have an encoder included, strictly speaking, encoding is a completely different operation from authoring. Ordinarily, as already mentioned, you'd encode the 'alien talk' into the video before ever bringing the reencoded video into the authoring program.
