I want to transcode the original DSLR movie files into something more editable with Premier. Ive been doing alot of reading threads and youtube video and still havent come across a specific answer about prepping video for editing. Ill be editing in Premier Pro CS5. I bought a Nikon D3100 and found my old Gateway wouldnt handle the files so i bought a new Desktop. My computer can handle the native DSLR files i import but once i start adding effects it stutters a bit. What i want to accomplish is the best Quality HD video i can possibly get. Im gonna be posting to Youtube.
Dont wanna spend any more money.

You can use cineform. There is a free version now called gopro cineform studio (ever since gopro bought them) . Another option is DNxHD, also free . Cineform performs better (slightly smoother editing experience than dnxhd), both give similar quality at similar bitrates .
