  1. I am capturing HDTV from cable box through component to AverTv hd-dvr.
There is a grid of small, light dots that show up onscreen and in the resulting DVD video.
Are these a result of a bad card, avermedia tech support could not see the dots in a sample video, or are they a result of my ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card possibly going bad?
Either way, what HDTV capture card with component would you recommend or what ATI card would you recommend?
I have DVI display and my HP 180t options go up to Radeon HD 5570.

  4. Yes the spots are definitely in the video. I can't believe AverMedia's tech support couldn't see them. Have you viewed the component output of the cable box on a TV to be sure the problem isn't in the cable box? Assuming that's OK, did you capture as MPEG 2? Try a different codec and see if you get the same spots. If different codecs give you the same spots there must be something wrong with the capture card.

  5. Yes it shows up on wmv and avi formats.
I will try the cable box.
Could it be my ATI 4850 graphics card?

No. The graphics card plays no part in the video capture process. It's just there so you can see what's going on.
